30 Places In Jamaica You'll Wish You Found Sooner!

30 Places In Jamaica You'll Wish You Found Sooner!
Jamaica has a beach a whole community went to court to keep, a hilltop where two of the last century's most famous writers are buried within sight of each other, and a lagoon that glows in the dark when you touch the water. Most visitors never leave the strip of coast between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Almost none of this is on the postcard. In this video, we count down all thirty, ranked from quietly overlooked to genuinely unforgettable: → A rainforest waterfall in the only part of Jamaica on the UNESCO World Heritage list, added in 2015 → A waterfall you reach by rowboat through a chamber inside a cliff, on the grounds of an old indigo plantation → A far-western river of 21 cascades you climb through the water itself → A garden waterfall five minutes from Ocho Rios with a lookout 420 feet above the coast → A chain of turquoise mountain pools the local guides kept quiet for years → A cove where a cold river crosses the sand into the warm Caribbean in a few steps → The beach where jerk cooking was first sold to the public, smoked over pimento wood → An uninhabited white-sand cay 15 minutes by boat off old Port Royal → A deep pool that shifts from turquoise to sapphire, wrongly rumored to be a famous film set → A driftwood bar on stilts three-quarters of a mile out to sea, destroyed and rebuilt three times → The mountain village where Bob Marley was born and is buried, still run by his family → The hilltop home and grave of playwright Noel Coward, built on a spot once used as a pirate lookout → The house where Ian Fleming wrote every James Bond novel, starting in 1952 → The Montego Bay square named for the man who led the 1831 rebellion and was hanged there in 1832 → The great house behind the island's most famous ghost story, one a novelist invented in 1929 → The bamboo-raft river a Hollywood actor turned into a pastime in the 1940s → The oldest rum distillery on the island, making rum since 1749, home of the first female master blender → The Kingston mansion built in 1881 by the first Black millionaire in Jamaica → A cave that hid the Taino, the Spanish, the enslaved, and wartime smugglers across 500 years → A former plantation turned flower garden with a trail to the exact spring where a river begins → A 2.5-mile tunnel of bamboo planted in the 1700s to shade the road → A three-mile stretch of highway roofed over by ferns in an old riverbed → Mineral hot springs a runaway found in the 1600s, beside a botanical garden planted in 1779 → A cliff that drops about 1,700 feet straight to the sea, with a lighthouse at the top → Seven-tiered spring-fed falls on a working cattle estate you reach by tractor → The 7,402-foot peak you climb at 2 a.m. to watch the sun rise over Cuba → A 250-year-old Georgian town that had piped water in its streets before some far larger cities And at number one: the Martha Brae, a calm river in Trelawny you cross the old way, on a bamboo raft poled by a guide, on a run of about three miles through quiet forest. The river carries a story older than the rafting. A Taino woman named Martha Brae was said to know where the Spanish had hidden their gold, and when they forced her to lead them to a cave by the river, the tale says she used her knowledge of the water to change the river's course and drown them inside it, sealing the gold away for good. The cave and the gold have never been found. Most visitors spend a week on the coast and never once pole up this river into the interior.
