This is Salt River Port — built in 1954 by Wisco Wharves Limited, a subsidiary of British sugar giant Tate & Lyle — and almost nobody knows it existed. At its peak, Wisco Wharves controlled nearly 79% of all sugar leaving Jamaica. They owned the estates, the factories, the ports, and the ships that carried Jamaican sugar back to Britain and Canada. An entire industry — on an island that wasn't theirs. Today, the warehouses still stand. The name Wisco Wharves Limited is still on the wall. And the barges that once carried bulk sugar through the mangrove waterway to waiting cargo ships in Salt River Bay — are still in the water. Slowly sinking. This is the story they never told you.
