In this One Love Jamaica documentary, we explore desalination—the process of removing salt and minerals from seawater to produce freshwater—and examine how it could contribute to Jamaica’s long-term water security. This technology is not entirely new to the island. In 2016, the Jamaica Public Service Company installed an Aqua Blue-C100 freshwater generator at its Rockfort Power Station in Kingston Harbour. The industrial system used seawater and waste heat from two diesel engines to produce approximately 30,000 litres of purified water daily, replacing water previously transported from Hunts Bay. The Rockfort plant was never intended to provide drinking water to Kingston. Instead, it offers a small Jamaican example of how desalination can reduce dependence on conventional freshwater sources when used in the right location and for the right purpose. We also examine government plans and feasibility studies for potential desalination projects in Clarendon and St Thomas, as well as the technology’s possible use by hotels, hospitals, factories, farms and isolated coastal communities. Desalination is not a replacement for Jamaica’s rivers, wells, dams or reservoirs. It must work alongside rainwater harvesting, watershed protection, wastewater reuse, pipeline improvements, leak reduction and other major water projects. It also carries financial and environmental challenges, including high energy consumption and the safe disposal of concentrated brine. I returned to Snake Island, Indonesia… But this time, we weren’t just trying to survive. Welcome back to Jerry's incredible tropical fruit forest in Jupiter, Florida! Jerry has become known on the channel as the “Set It and Forget It” fruit-tree grower, and today we're touring his property during fruit season to see what's actually producing. This is not your typical perfectly manicured backyard orchard. Jerry experiments with traditional orchard areas, densely planted tropical fruit forests, rare fruit trees and trees that are largely allowed to grow naturally. And some of the results are incredible! We look at mangoes, avocados, white sapote, mulberries, longan, pomegranate, star fruit, citrus, pomelo, Garcinia and many other tropical and subtropical fruit trees. One of the biggest surprises is Jerry's citrus. Many South Florida growers are afraid to plant citrus because of citrus greening, yet some of Jerry's citrus trees continue producing impressive crops. His Sugar Belle is loaded despite showing signs of disease. We also visit one of the most dependable mangoes you can grow—Pickering—and see what happened when Jerry's Sweetheart mango became so heavily loaded that he lost much of the tree and 123 mangoes! Jerry and I don't always agree about pruning, spacing, sunlight and how fruit trees should be managed—and that's part of what makes visiting his property so interesting.
