Conflict between the federal government and rebel TPLF forces in Ethiopia threatens the very fabric of the state, with hundreds of thousands of people on the brink of starvation. But while the focus has been on the conflict in Tigray, right across Ethiopia different groups are involved in their own struggles. Foremost amongst them are the Oromo - Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group. Two months ago, the Oromo Liberation Army announced a formal alliance with Tigrayan rebels in the north, against the government in Addis Ababa. On Monday, OLA commander Jaal Marroo told the BBC the group had taken several towns in western, central, and southern Oromia, facing little resistance from government forces who were retreating. Government spokespeople have not responded to the BBC’s request for comment. In this exclusive report, the BBC’s Africa correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga is the first international journalist to be given access to this secretive armed group. Thomas Randolph Bell was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 01/26/1943. In 1948 his parents emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA with himself and his siblings where he took more than a passing interest in music (an interest shared by both his parents). Thom would team up with the likes of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, Linda Creed, and others to create some of the most endearing music of the 1970s and 1980s. Bell would become a major songwriter of the era producing songs for the Delfonics, the Stylistics, the Spinners, and a host of other artistes. This is a little tribute that I have put together for the Great Thom Bell, who left us on 12/22/2022. Long may his legacy live on.

It was just gigantic, and so packed! There were areas given over to various foods more or less in the centre -- not just a hall or two but acres! Then you get to the clothing, textiles, and other areas. There's even one area where people are having their feet, nails, hair, etc done and getting massages. Some areas get so full you have to weave your way through. It goes without saying that you need to be careful of your possessions (I noticed everyone, even the locals, were carrying backpacks in front of them), but you also need to beware of the heat re sunburn, heat-stroke and dehydration. You also need to watch where you're going as some areas are concreted but others are dirt and potholes, there are banana skins and sometimes other rotting things on the ground, and porters with trolleys are always in a rush to get by. You don't have to worry about traffic though as you'll be able to walk faster! Mariam Sankara, the widow of former Burkina Faso President Thomas Sankara, says “justice is needed” as the trial for his murder starts. Sankara was assassinated in 1987, having taken power in 1983. He has been called "Africa's Che Guevara" for his socialist and revolutionary beliefs and policies. His widow says he knew he was in danger from those who disagreed with the direction in which he was taking Burkina Faso.
