Synopsis:
New Zealand lies between two powerful geological plates, making it one of the most geologically active countries on Earth. Earthquakes, landslides and underwater upheavals constantly reshape its coastlines and ocean habitats.
Off the coast of Kaikōura, a vast underwater canyon descends thousands of metres beneath the surface. These nutrient-rich waters attract sperm whales, the largest toothed predators on the planet. Using echolocation, they hunt deep-sea squid at extraordinary depths and can remain submerged for more than an hour.
Further south, the waters of Milford Sound contain a strange natural phenomenon. Heavy rainfall carries tannins from the surrounding rainforest into the fjord, creating a dark layer of fresh water that blocks sunlight. This allows deep-sea species to live unusually close to the surface.
Divers encounter ancient black coral, venomous sea anemones, sea cucumbers and one of the ocean’s oldest predators: the broadnose sevengill shark. With seven gill slits instead of the usual five, this powerful shark has remained largely unchanged for millions of years.
Remote cameras descend hundreds of metres into unexplored waters, revealing rattail fish and hagfish—primitive creatures that survived alongside the dinosaurs. Their strange adaptations allow them to endure darkness, pressure and limited food.
The journey continues to northern Australia, where scientists study the critically endangered sawfish. Part shark and part ray, this remarkable animal uses its long, toothed snout to detect and strike prey.
Fossil discoveries in New Zealand reveal an even more dramatic prehistoric ocean. Ancient whales, giant sawfish, plesiosaurs and the enormous megalodon once ruled these waters. Their extinction allowed new marine giants, including modern whales and orcas, to evolve.
The documentary also examines the impact of a powerful earthquake on the Kaikōura coastline. The seabed rises by several metres, seal colonies are buried by landslides and marine habitats are transformed within seconds.
Through spectacular underwater photography, scientific exploration and fossil evidence, Violent Seas reveals how New Zealand’s marine animals have adapted to a world of constant geological change.
Reviews:
A visually striking marine documentary combining deep-sea exploration, prehistoric predators and dramatic geological events. Violent Seas offers a fascinating look at the animals that survive in one of the most dynamic ocean environments on Earth.
