POV: You Interrupt the Mating Season of Bee-Eaters #wildlife
Hungary is a river-shaped wilderness where the Danube, Tisza and Zala set the rhythm of life. From the frozen Puszta in winter—where herdsmen and their dogs guide shaggy Hungarian gray cattle and young white-tailed eagles gather at carrion—to the spring thaw that floods the Gemenc alluvial forests, this film follows otters, catfish, storks and red deer through a year of extremes. At Lake Balaton, asp surge upstream to spawn as egrets, swans and otters wait for precious eggs. Summer heat traps fish in shrinking ponds, drawing black storks, herons and hungry otters, until sudden floods force deer and boar onto tiny islands. Autumn brings the rut and the rare, first-ever filmed dance of red deer, while up to 100,000 migrating cranes roost on drained fishing lakes.
