CDU/CSU's Merz Wins German Election, AfD Sees Historic Gains | The Opening Trade 02/24
The euro rose and German mid-cap stocks rallied on speculation that Germany’s election results may pave the way for more spending to boost economic growth. Germany’s conservative leader Friedrich Merz emerged as the winner, but the results gave his bloc just one clear path to power with intense pressure to form a government. While Merz’s CDU/CSU alliance won 28.6% of the votes, the only centrist two-party option for a majority in the Bundestag is to partner with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s battered Social Democrats. The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, doubled support to become the second-strongest party with 20.8%, it's highest percentage in over a decade. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. Trump's Plan for Gaza Meets Mixed Reaction in Middle East
US President Donald Trump’s idea of depopulating and taking over Gaza was broadly welcomed in Israel, with officials praising the surprise proposal as a means to beef up security following the war with Hamas. In the Arab world, the suggestion was taken differently. Saudi Arabia called the plan an “infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people” — a position echoed by governments across the Middle East. The initial reaction on both sides was one of confusion. No one, including Israel, was expecting the new US President to suggest his country step in and rebuild the coastal Palestinian territory, creating a new “Riviera.” The approach would, according to Trump, require moving more than 2 million Gazans out of the war-ravaged enclave, with the president even raising the possibility of deploying US troops. Bloomberg News Israel Bureau Chief Ethan Bronner reports on divergent reactions to the proposal across the reason as well as the status of the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Ethan speaks with Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Radio. Microsoft has begun canceling leases for a substantial amount of datacenter capacity in the US, a move that may reflect concerns about whether it’s building more AI computing than it will need over the long term, TD Cowen said in a report. OpenAI’s biggest backer has voided leases totaling “a couple of hundred megawatts” of capacity, the US brokerage wrote Friday, citing channel checks or inquiries with supply chain providers. US Treasury Hacked by China-Backed Attackers | Daybreak: Europe 12/31/2024
Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we'll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins. On today's show, The US Treasury Department was hacked by a Chinese state-sponsored actor through a third-party software service provider, according to a letter the agency sent to Congress on Monday. Treasury described the intrusion as a “major cybersecurity incident,” since it was attributed to a state-sponsored actor, according to the letter, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News. Treasury was notified on Dec. 8 by a third-party software provider, BeyondTrust Inc., that a hacker had gained access “to a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service used to remotely provide technical support for Treasury Departmental Offices (DO) end users,” according to the letter.  The department is being assisted by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the FBI, the intelligence community and third-party forensic investigators. Based on available information, advanced hackers tied to China were behind the incident, according to the letter. The Chinese embassy in Washington opposes US “smear attacks against China without any factual basis,” it said in an emailed statement.
