Pat O'Callaghan Wins An Emotion Irish Hammer Throw Gold - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Irish rugby player Pat O'Callaghan embodied the amateur, self-starting spirit which led to hammer success in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Relive his triumph in these classic Olympic highlights. He learnt the discipline using his own home-made hammer and ended up winning the sport's biggest accolade borrowing someone else's. O'Callaghan was born in 1905 and was raised in a family steeped in the traditional sporting arenas of the Irish - Gaelic football, hurling and rugby. He and his two brothers excelled in a variety of sports at school and university, yet in specialising in the hammer O'Callaghan had to overcome a number of prejudices against adopting a sport outside Ireland's holy trinity. Yet specialise he did and thanks to the practice using the hammer he had made himself using a shot filled with ball bearings attached to a bicycle pedal he booked his place at the 1928 Games. He and his brothers paid their own way to Amsterdam, and yet O'Callaghan was not expected to prevail in an event where the Americans had dominated. It was actually British thrower Malcolm Noakes who was favoured to win gold but O'Callaghan, sporting a more agile, athletic frame than many of his burlier rivals, rose to the occasion. He qualified for the final in sixth and was trailing in the early rounds before he decided to ask the leader Oissian Skiold if he could use his hammer. The Irishman, his face a picture of focus, sent the hammer flying out to168ft 7 inches, or 51.39m, and the gold was his. It was an emotional occasion for the Irish nation, as it was the first time they had won gold since independence from the British in 1921 and hence the first time their new national - Amhrán na bhFiann -- had sounded out over the Olympic arena. O'Callaghan would defend his title in Los Angeles four years later. He died in 1991. _____________________________________________________ 🇨🇳 #Beijing2022 replays: https://oly.ch/B22Replays 🇯🇵 #Tokyo2020 replays: https://oly.ch/T20Replays 🗞️ News from the Olympic world: https://oly.ch/News

Midori Ito's Courageous Comeback Wins Silver - Albertville 1992 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the incredibly courageous moment Japan's Midori Ito comes back from an early fall in her figure skating routine to complete with amazing skill and win the event's silver medal at the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympic Games. Though American figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi was the Olympic champion, another athlete also made her mark in the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympics women's individual competition. Midori Ito had arrived at the Albertville 1992 Olympics as the favourite for the gold medal, but a poor performance in the short program made it challenging to fulfil that objective. Even just to maintain her hopes of an Olympic medal, the Japanese skater now needed a strong display in the long program. So when she failed to land a triple Axel at the beginning of her presentation, one could expect her confidence to be definitely shaken. Midori Ito, however, showing true Olympic spirit not only kept to her routine but also took a chance and attempted the triple Axel once again. This time, Ito landed it brilliantly and with that, became the Albertville 1992 women's individual figure skating Olympic silver medallist. Later, at the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympic Games, Midori Ito was chosen to be the final torchbearer and light the Olympic flame. _____________________________________________________ 🇨🇳 #Beijing2022 replays: https://oly.ch/B22Replays 🇯🇵 #Tokyo2020 replays: https://oly.ch/T20Replays 🗞️ News from the Olympic world: https://oly.ch/News

Trump Tariffs: US Emerges as Biggest Loser in Markets | The Opening Trade 04/03
President Donald Trump’s shake-up of the global trading system is hurting US assets more than those in many of the big economies he has just slapped with additional tariffs. US equity index futures tumbled after Trump announced a sweeping series of tariffs following the market close on Wednesday, and a gauge of the dollar slumped. But the impact elsewhere was less extreme. The Stoxx Europe 600 was down trading while the Euro was up against the dollar, hitting its highest level since October. The widespread selloff in global markets makes clear that investors don’t expect any winners from the latest — and by the far the largest — salvo in a growing trade war. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. Markets Sell Off on Worse-Than-Expected US Tariffs | Bloomberg Brief 04/03/2025

📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Carly Patterson wins artistic gymnastics gold for the USA at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Carly Patterson didn't start the Athens 2004 Olympic Games quite as expected. She began the competition with an underwhelming performance during the Artistic Gymnastics team competition which gave Team USA the silver medal. The individual competition showed better prospects when Patterson made it to the All-Around final as the top qualifier. However, after her first apparatus, Carly Patterson found herself in eighth place, which brought concerns to the fans and meant she would need to improve significantly to pursue a medal. It didn't take long until Patterson showed she was back in the competition with solid displays on the bars and the beam. Still, she had to beat double Olympic champion Svetlana Khorkina who had the lead before Carly Patterson's floor presentation. After a stunning performance and a final total core of 38.387, Carly Patterson made her comeback official and was now the new Artistic Gymnastics individual all-around Olympic champion, inspiring future American gymnastics. _____________________________________________________ 🇨🇳 #Beijing2022 replays: https://oly.ch/B22Replays 🇯🇵 #Tokyo2020 replays: https://oly.ch/T20Replays 🗞️ News from the Olympic world: https://oly.ch/News

Ning Li Becomes The "Little Prince Of Gymnastics" - Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe China's Ning Li puts on an incredible performance in the artistic gymnastic events at the Los Angeles to begin his amazing Olympic career and become known as the little prince of gymnastics. Ning Li was born in 1963 in the city of Liuzhou in southern China. He won his first national gymnastics competitions at the age of 10. In 1982, he won his first World Cup events. Two years later, at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, his moment had arrived: Ning Li won six medals, three of them gold. His first Olympic medal in the team competition with China's silver, which heralded the start of an impressive harvest. In the all-around competition, Ning made a mistake on the parallel bars, which penalised him for the final ranking, where he finished third behind America's Peter Vidmar, silver medallist, and Japan's Koji Gushiken, who won the gold. He made up for this in the floor exercises, winning his first gold medal with the excellent score of 19.925 out of 20, beating his compatriot Lou Yun, who managed 19.775. On the pommel horse, the competition was even tougher. Ning Li produced a remarkable performance which earned him the score of 19.950. The American Peter Vidmar also achieved an excellent performance. The two athletes had identical scores, and both stood on the top step of the podium. On the rings, Ning Li this time had to share the honours with Japan's Koji Gushiken, as both men finished with the score of 19.850. In the vault, for the first time in this event, four gymnasts tied for second place. With a score of 19.825, Li won silver, his sixth medal, making him the athlete with the most medals at the 1984 edition of the Games. This achievement earned him the nickname of "little prince of gymnastics". On 8 August 2008, the organisers of the Beijing Olympic Games gave him the great honour of selecting him as the last Olympic torchbearer -- the person with the enormous responsibility of lighting the Olympic cauldron. Everyone will always remember the image of Ning Li "flying" around the perimeter of the Bird's Nest stadium.
