Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children. As a young child she was paralysed by polio, and contracted both scarlet fever and double pneumonia. Many doctors felt she would never walk again, yet she always believed otherwise. By the time she was 12, she had regained her ability to walk and took up athletics. Eight years later she was an Olympic champion. Rudolph made her Olympic debut at the 1956 Melbourne Games. Aged just 16, she was a member of the American 4x100m relay team that claimed a bronze medal. The 1960 Rome Games provided the defining moments of Rudolph's extraordinary life story. She stormed to gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, breaking three world records in the process. She was dubbed "The Black Gazelle" by the European press for her speed, beauty and grace. Dick Fosbury Changes The High Jump Forever - Fosbury Flop- Mexico 1968 Olympics
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe One of the most memorable and historic moments in Olympic history as Dick Fosbury re-invents the high jump competition with the use of his Fosbury flop method instead of the classic scissors technique. High Jump record breakers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=741zHXo9wi8 Richard Douglas ("Dick") Fosbury was born on 6 March 1947 in Portland, Oregon. He is widely credited with inventing the Fosbury flop, a back-first jumping technique that revolutionised the high jump. He developed the flop aged 16 after finding the standard techniques difficult. At the time, jumpers took off from their inside foot and swung their outside foot up and over the bar. Fosbury's technique was to race up to the bar at great speed and take off from his right (or outside) foot. Then he twisted his body so that he went over the bar head first with his back to the bar. His technique truly changed the sport at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Despite scepticism from judges and coaches, Fosbury cleared every height up to 2.22 metres without a miss and then achieved a personal record of 2.24 metres to win the gold medal. By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists were using the Fosbury flop. Eugenio Monti Says An Olympic Farewell With 2 Golds - Grenoble 1968 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Italy's Eugenio Monti caps his final Olympic appearance at the Grenoble 1968 Winter Games with gold in the two bobsleigh events, an emotional and historic moment for the former skier. Eugenio Monti started out as a promising skier, nicknamed the Flying Redhead, before a knee injury in 1951 cut his career short. But the end of one career marked the start of another as Monti turned his attention to bobsleigh, with great success. Before his final Olympic Games in 1968, he had already won two silver medals at the 1956 Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo and two bronze medals in Innsbruck 1964. At Grenoble, aged 40, Monti knew those Winter Games would be his last chance to win an Olympic title. The Italian four-man team was comprised by Roberto Zandonella, Mario Armano and Luciano de Paolis who also joined Monti in the two-man event. Fired up by the final Olympic participation of the group's eldest member, Italy claimed gold medals in both the two-man and four-man events. It was a memorable way for him to cap a colourful Olympic career. Daley Thompson Wins Second Decathlon Gold - Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the moment Great Britain's Daley Thompson won the decathlon gold medal at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games to retain his Olympic title in these amazing highlights. Daley Thompson won his first Olympic gold at the 1980 Moscow Games. Four years later, he returned to defend his title in Los Angeles. In his way stood his great rival, Jürgen Hingsen of West Germany. For the first seven events, little separated Thompson and Hingsen as they battled for first place. But Thompson pulled away with strong performances in the pole vault and the javelin. With the gold medal secure, Thompson needed to run the final event, the 1500m, in 4m34.98s to break Hingsen's world record. Yet Thompson eased up at the finish line and stopped the clock at 4m35.00s! Two years later, IAAF officials reviewed the photo timer results and discovered that Thompson had completed the 110m hurdles one hundredth of a second quicker than initially recorded. They added one more point to his Olympic total and he was given a belated share of the world record. This record would stand for nine years, and it was only at the 2004 Athens Games that it was bettered by Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic. Trump Should Use Targeted Tariffs, Rep. Hill Says
House Financial Services Chairman French Hill says he's concerned about President Donald Trump's across-the-board tariffs approach. “President Trump is right to engage in trade diplomacy, but I believe sincerely that you should target sectors in a very isolated way and achieve results,” Hill said on "Balance of Power." The Arkansas Republican also talks about getting a new budget bill passed in Washington. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Dan Jansen Breaks His Jynx To Win Gold - Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe After numerous Olympic set backs Dan Jansen finally breaks his jynx to win gold at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games. By the time of the Lillehammer Games, in 1994 Dan Jansen had won seven overall World Cup titles and set seven world records. However at the Olympics he had experienced nothing but disappointment. After finishing fourth at 500m in 1984, Jansen was one of the favourites in 1988. But on the morning of the 500m, his sister died of leukemia. Jansen tried to race anyway, but fell. He fell again in the 1,000m. In 1992 he was again a favorite, but could do no better than fourth in the 500 and 26th in the 1,000. In Lillehammer, Jansen was the overwhelming favourite at 500m, but he slipped and finished eighth. Despite his great non-Olympic success, Jansen had never won an Olympic medal despite competing in seven Olympic races over a ten-year period. His last chance was the 1,000m, a distance at which six of his opponents had better times. Jansen was on world record pace when he slipped during the penultimate turn. Fortunately, he steadied himself and powered on to set a new world record (1:12.43) and win a gold Olympic medal at last.
