Before Usain Bolt - The First Jamaican Sprint Star Arthur Wint - London 1948 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The Jamaican world of sprinter hasn't always been dominated by the vast collection of stars we know and love today as can be seen in these classic Olympic highlights of Arthur Wint at the London 1948 Olympic Games. Much before the world of sprinting become dominated with the likes of Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake, Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint were Jamaica's key athletes for the London 1948 Olympic Games. McKenley was seen as the main favourite to win the 400 metres event. Except according to McKinley himself, who pointed at Arthur Wint as the one to be watched. Though not largely considered the favourite for the win, Wint definitely had the crowd's support from the local crowd having connection with Great Britain, from a Scottish mother to being a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force. Arthur Wint entered in both the 400m and 800m. In the latter, he lost out to America's Mal Whitfield, and had to settle for Silver, something that made him determined not to finish behind Whitfield over the single-lap race. He thought McKenley might beat him, but nobody else. As it was, McKenley was leading on the home straight after his trademark flying start but began to fade. Wint saw this and pushed himself to catch his friend and rival. With 20 metres to go, he overtook McKenley and won the race by a comfortable margin. It was Jamaica's first Olympic gold medal. A second might have followed in the 4x400m, but for the cruellest of luck. Running the third leg, and desperate to beat the American team, Wint pulled a muscle and the Jamaicans had to pull out. It would take another four years before they'd get the success they so craved. How YouTube Beat Disney to Become the "New King of All Media"
With fears of search advertising growth slowing and Alphabet actively working to diversify beyond it — while still defending its dominance — Cloud and YouTube have become critical drivers of near- to medium-term growth. Together, these segments now contribute over 30% of total revenue and are the fastest-growing scaled businesses within Alphabet. According to new research from MoffettNathanson, YouTube is set to become the “New King of All Media.” As of 2024, YouTube was already the second-largest media company by revenue at $54.2 billion, trailing only Disney. However, this dynamic is expected to shift in 2025, when YouTube is poised to take the top spot — making it not only the leader in engagement but revenue as well. If YouTube was a standalone business, public comps suggest the business would be worth $475 to $550 billion, or about 30% of Alphabet’s current valuation. MoffettNathanson co-founder and senior research analyst Michael Nathanson explains how YouTube's dominance is impacting other streaming giants like Netflix and Disney, and how less powerful content providers are being forced to adapt. Michael speaks with Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Radio. USA's 'Miracle On Ice' Performance - Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Team USA defeats the mighty USSR Ice Hockey team in a game that would be forever know as the 'miracle on ice'. The underdog triumph came at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games as Team USA went on to win gold in the event. The Ice Hockey tournament at the Lake Placid Olympics was decided in a final group stage including United States, Soviet Union, Sweden and Finland. And, although there was no final match per say, the match between the USA and the USSR became later known as the unofficial final, dubbed the "Miracle on Ice". The Soviet team was heralded as the strongest in the world, with an amazing recent record, including beating the Americans by 10-3 in a preparatory match only three days before the Games. The match began closely with a 2x2 score at the end of the first period. During the second period only the Soviets scored, leaving the USA behind by 3x2 with 20 minutes left. Still, the United States made an impressive comeback and - pushed by their home supporters - scored twice in the final period to win the match by 4x3 in a thrilling and surprising turn of events. Team USA would later become the Olympic champion after a final 4x2 win against Finland. Lord David Burghley Claims Olympic Hurdles Title - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe In Amsterdam 1928, David Burghley was eliminated in the early stages of the 100m hurdles but it was in the longer event that he would seal his place in history. Relive Burghley amazing performance later in the Games in these classic Olympic highlights. American hurdlers had won every event since its inception at the Games in 1900, and Burghley ran a measured campaign. He qualified for the final third fastest in his semi, and in the race for gold he ran a superbly measured race. With Americans Frank Cuhel and Morgan Taylor the favourites, Burghley executed the perfect race. While the Americans, Cuhel in particular, were struggling with their stride patters as the race entered its final third, Burghley looked the model of control. With 60 metres to go he was level with Cuhel and looking across the cinder track at Cuhel he did just enough to win and secure the gold medal. It was a hugely popular win for a tremendously likable character. He was hoisted onto the shoulders of his fellow athletes.
