Mary Lou Retton Comes Back From Injury To Win Gold - Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Mary Lou Retton - USA - Artistic Gymnastics - Individual All-around - Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games Prior to the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, no American man or woman had won the all-around artistic gymnastics gold medal. And seldom has an Olympic competitor been roared on by a home crowd quite like Mary Lou Retton in Los Angeles. Every move, pirouette and spin was egged on by the vociferous home support, and she was to need every decibel to help her eclipse the supreme Romanian Ecaterina Szabo. Szabo was world class, and would leave Los Angeles with four gold medals, but alas none of them was the blue riband all-around event because of the irresistible Retton. A few months earlier and a freak injury threatened the participation of the girl from Fairmont, West Virginia. After qualifying from the Olympic trials, she sat down to sign autographs for her fans when her knee locked. The puzzling injury required surgery which needed a three-month recovery, leaving her perilously short of preparation ahead of the first, and biggest, international competition of her career. However, she recovered and Retton and Szabo put on a stunning show of athleticism and grace for the watching millions. With two rotations remaining, Szabo held a 0.15pt lead over the American, but Retton nailed a perfect 10 in the floor exercises and needed to repeat the feat in the vault to pip Szabo to gold. You could hear a pin drop as Retton stood at the end of the runway, knowing that only perfection would grab the United States their first ever gold in the event. She absolutely floored her landing and sent the watching crowd into raptures as the judges conferred over their award. When the perfect 10 flashed up there was pandemonium in the arena. She never repeated the dizzy heights of that night in Los Angeles but she had emulated her heroine and inspiration Nadia Comaneci in the most dramatic style possible. Percy Williams Wins 100m & 200m Gold At 19 - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Canada's 19 year old Percy Williams claims the gold medal in the 100m and 200m events at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games. Percy Williams was the very antithesis of the modern day sprinter. While now the muscular, powerful, bulky speedsters prevail, Williams was slight and pale and looked anything but an Olympic champion in the waiting. When Williams turned up at the Canadian trials in early 1928, not only was he not yet 20 but he had run only a handful of 100m races in his career. However he booked his place on the boat to the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in emphatic style with victories in the 100m and 200m events. Williams opened in Holland with a standard 11.0 sec win in the opening round of heats but the world and the rest of the field sat up and top took notice of the waif-like Canadian when he equalled the Olympic record of legend Harold Abrahams of 10.6secs in the second heats. In an incredibly tight set of semis, four men equalled Williams's mark and commentators felt the favoured runners from the United States and Great Britain would come through in the final. When the six sprinters settled down at the start line on the uneven, cinder track, there was an expectant hush among the crowd. In his upright starting position, back straight, eyes focused forward, Williams exploded off the line and by 30 metres the race was already in his grasp. As he crossed the line he flung his arms into the air in celebration and won by half a yard in 10.8secs from Britain's Jack London. A matter of days later he added the 200m title and news of his victories was greeted with jubilation in his native Vancouver. Weightlifting Failure & Success - Moscow 1980 Olympics
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch A look back at some of the success and failure stories from the weightlifting events at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. Much of the focus leading up to the weightlifting tournament at the 1980 Olympic Games was on an injury to Russian legend Vassily Alekseyev. The scene was set for the 353-pound giant from Ryazan to make it an unprecedented hat-trick of gold medals in the super heavyweight category after record-breaking triumphs in Munich and Montreal. However an injury originally picked up just before the 1978 world championships in Pennsylvania restricted his chances and he was eliminated in the early stages. Russian lifters dominated, however, with five of the 10 gold medals on offer taken by the home contingent. Kanybek Osmanaliyev and Viktor Mazin took the honours in the now defunct flyweight and featherweight divisions, the former winning by the slenderest of margins on lower bodyweight. Yet it was two Bulgarians who set the competition alight at the Izmailovo Sports Palace. First Yanko Rusev took the lightweight gold with a new Olympic and world record, his overall total of 342.5kgs including a world record jerk of 195kgs putting him streets ahead of the field. Team-mate Assen Zlatev then followed suit in the middleweight category to take gold with 360kgs and then achieved a jerk world record of 205.5kgs after the competition had been completed. Home fans had something to cheer about once more when Yurik Vardanian crushed the opposition in the light heavyweight field, winning by an unprecedented 27.5kgs with a winning total of 400kgs, a score which would have won him gold in the first and middle heavyweight classes. Belarus-born Leonid Taranenko took the heavyweight gold for Russia, and 12 years later was to gain a silver for the unified team at the Barcelona Games at super-heavyweight level. With Alekseyev bowing out in the early stages, Sultan Rakhmanov proved a worthy successor by jerking an eye-watering 245kgs to lift gold by a healthy margin in the super heavyweight. Ann Packer Wins 800m Gold For Great Britain - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic Highlights from the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games as Ann Packer wins the women's 800m gold medal for Great Britain. Despite being a very versatile athlete, at the Tokyo 1964 Games, Ann Packer decided to concentrate her efforts on the 400m and then, almost as an after-thought, entered the 800m, another event in which she had little experience but lots of potential. Packer set a European record in the 400m final, but had to be content with a silver medal behind the Australian Betty Cuthbert, who had sprinted clear and held on, despite Packer closing in the final stages. The British athlete turned now to the longer distance, but was not confident of matching that medal-winning performance. She could finish only fifth in the opening heat, scraping into the next round, and was then third in her semi-final. Feeling tired, and lacking confidence, Packer considered missing the final entirely to go shopping. But she was inspired by her fiancé, athlete Robbie Brightwell, who had finished a disappointing fourth in the men's 400m final and was despondent on missing out on a medal. And so, to cheer him up, Packer decided to race anyway. The race was led from the start by the French athlete Maryvonne Dupureur, who broke away from the pack and held first place for most of its distance. Behind her, though, Packer moved up from eighth, to sixth, to third and then overtook Dupureur with 70 metres to go, holding on to win in a new world record time. "It was so easy, I could not believe I had won," said Packer afterwards. "I knew nothing about the event and that probably helped." It was a triumph that appeared to set up this exceptional athlete for a glittering sporting future. Instead, Packer retired from competition at the age of just 22. She married Robbie - who had won his own medal with a silver in the 4x400m relay - and they had three sons - one became a 400m runner, the other two became professional footballers. USA Share The 4x400m Relay World Record - Seoul 1988 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The USA's 4x400m team won gold by running the same time as the world record at the time of the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, relive this race in these classic Olympic highlights. When the athletics programme came to its conclusion with the traditional relays at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, the United States boasted a formidable record in the event. They had failed to capture gold just twice since 1952; once in the 1980 Moscow boycott, the other in 1972 when two of their nominated athletes were banned from further competition after talking on the victory podium as the Star Spangled Banner was being played. The trio of Steve Lewis, Butch Reynolds and Danny Everett had completed a clean sweep of the medals in the individual event and it seemed that only a baton drop or a technical infringement could stop them. Everett and Lewis led out the quartet and by the time the individual champion handed the baton to Kevin Robinzine the Americans were almost half the final straight clear. Butch Reynolds' lap turned out to be a race against the clock. Reynolds, in his distinctive languid, head-pumping style, extended the lead further and finally crossed the line with the stadium display showing a time of 2mins 56.17secs. It was one hundredth of a second behind the world record which had stood since the Americans stormed to victory in the rarefied air of Mexico City 20 years earlier. Officials shaved off the crucial 100th for the confirmed time and a share of the world record was theirs. 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Javelin made it's Olympic debut at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games and it was the hometown boy Eric Lemming who won gold in the event, setting his 10th world record in the event in the process. Eric Lemming was nineteen years old when he set a world record of 49.31m in the javelin throw in 1899. Unfortunately, javelin throw was not included in the Olympic programme in 1900, but Lemming travelled to Paris anyway and took part in six events, placing fourth in the high jump, the pole vault and the hammer throw and eighth in the discus throw. The javelin throw was finally accepted as an Olympic event in 1908, at which time Lemming was still the world record holder. Lemming won the freestyle javelin event (after which it was dropped from the program) and then set another world record (54.825m) in winning the regular javelin event by more than four metres. At the age of 32, Lemming made a final appearance at the 1912 Olympic Games, which were held in his home country of Sweden. Lemming rose to the occasion, earning the gold medal by making the first javelin throw to exceed 60m, a feat that led the appreciative crowd to give him a standing ovation. Later in the Games in Stockholm, he placed fourth in a one-time event in which the competitors threw the javelin with each hand, and he competed in a similar event with the discus. During his career, Lemming set ten javelin world records, culminating in a 1912 post-Olympic throw of 62.32m. Tesla's stock price dropped 9.2% to $217.41 amid a global equity market selloff, contradicting Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's prediction that it would never fall below a certain price again. The decline follows a 40% price target cut by Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives, citing Trump's trade policies and a brand crisis created by Elon Musk, and a weak first-quarter vehicle delivery report. Analysts have lowered their estimates for Tesla's sales and earnings, citing concerns over the impact of Trump's tariffs, particularly in China, where Musk's association with the US president may drive consumers to prefer domestic brands.
