The Day Jamaica Declared a State of Emergency
They called it a State of Emergency. The declassified files call it something else.
June 19, 1976. Prime Minister Michael Manley locks down Jamaica. Five hundred people detained without trial. Soldiers in the streets of Kingston. And buried in diplomatic cables that stayed sealed for decades: a $100 million offer made in secret on a Jamaican veranda, a CIA station that quietly doubled, an assassination report that made world headlines — and a handwritten note from the Director of the CIA himself that raises more questions than any denial ever answered.
This documentary opens the 1976 files: the bauxite levy that enraged American corporations, Manley's alliance with Fidel Castro, the Kissinger ultimatum, the alleged destabilization playbook Jamaicans still speak of today, the shooting of Bob Marley twelve days before the election, the Smile Jamaica concert, and the legacy of debt, garrisons, and gun violence that Jamaica is still paying for. Every claim is anchored to declassified U.S. State Department records, CIA reading-room documents, and published investigative journalism — and where history remains an allegation, we tell you exactly that.
Was Michael Manley a hero who stood up to an empire, or a leader who flew too close to a Cold War sun? Type HERO or ICARUS in the comments and defend your verdict — the sharpest historians on this platform are down there.
