Caribbean Journey
Jamaica's $20 Trillion Secret That Can Change Our Planet Forever
Jamaica secretly controls 54% of the surface of planet Earth and almost no one on the planet knows it. Inside a quiet office in Kingston, a small United Nations body called the International Seabed Authority holds legal authority over the entire ocean floor in international waters, an area larger than every continent on Earth combined. Buried beneath it: an estimated $20 trillion in battery metal, locked inside strange, slow growing rocks called polymetallic nodules that took millions of years to form. In 2025, the United States tried to bypass Jamaica's authority entirely. In 2026, the fight escalated inside Kingston itself and the outcome is still undecided. This is the real story of the deep sea mining gold rush, why it runs through a small Caribbean island, and why every Jamaican, Guyanese, and Trinidadian in the diaspora should be paying attention.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO THE DIASPORA
For decades, small Caribbean nations have watched larger powers write the rules on trade, debt, and climate finance. The International Seabed Authority, headquartered in Jamaica, is one of the rare exceptions genuine institutional power held by a small island nation over a resource the world's biggest economies cannot simply take by force. Watching a superpower try to bypass that authority isn't an abstract legal story. It's a direct test of whether small nations still get a real seat at the table in 2026.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the International Seabed Authority?
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is a United Nations affiliated body headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. It holds legal authority over the ocean floor in international waters, an area covering roughly 54% of the Earth's surface, under a legal principle known as the common heritage of humankind.
Why is Jamaica involved in deep sea mining?
Jamaica does not mine the deep sea itself. It hosts the ISA, the organization responsible for regulating deep-sea mining across the entire planet, giving the country significant diplomatic influence over a global industry worth trillions of dollars.
What are polymetallic nodules?
Polymetallic nodules are potato sized rocks found on the deep ocean floor, formed over millions of years from dissolved metals in seawater. They contain manganese, nickel, copper, and cobalt critical materials used in electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, and solar storage systems.
Did the United States bypass the International Seabed Authority?
In April 2025, the US signed an executive order to fast track deep sea mining licenses under a 1980 domestic law, without ISA approval. Because the US never ratified the treaty that created the ISA, it claimed authority to license mining in international waters it has no formal vote over. The move was condemned by ISA member states and triggered a formal investigation.
Is deep sea mining environmentally safe?
Marine scientists have raised serious concerns. Experimental mining tracks made over 40 years ago are still visible on the seafloor today, and some species disturbed by mining have never returned. Over 950 marine scientists and close to 40 governments have called for a pause on commercial deep-sea mining until more research is done.
When is the next major decision on deep sea mining?
The ISA Council is scheduled to reconvene in Kingston, Jamaica in July 2026 for the second part of its 31st session, ahead of the full Assembly meeting later that month.
