Venezuela Air Strikes: Video Shows Explosions in Caracas
Video shows overnight explosions in the Venezuela as the Latin American nation accused the US of launching an attack on the country. The first blasts were heard around 2 a.m. local time, according to residents. The Venezuelan government said military and civilian targets had been hit across three regions. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. CBS News cited US officials as saying that President Donald Trump had given the order to strike. US Sanctions Chinese Companies, Tankers With Venezuela Links
Laura Davison, Deputy Washington Bureau Chief for Bloomberg News, discusses the growing tensions between the White House and the governments of Venezuela and Iran. The Trump administration stepped up a pressure campaign against Venezuela’s oil exports by sanctioning companies based in Hong Kong and mainland China, along with related oil tankers it accused of evading restrictions. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Wednesday added four companies with links to Venezuela’s oil industry — Zhejiang-based Corniola Ltd. and Hong Kong-based Aries Global Investment Ltd., Krape Myrtle Co and Winky International Ltd. — to its specially designated nationals and blocked persons list. It also sanctioned four vessels connected with those firms: Della, Nord Star, Rosalind and Valiant. The US already has a list of vessels and companies under sanction for their connections to Venezuela’s oil trade. But targeting Chinese firms doing business there is rare, and could be a signal to Beijing to steer clear of the stand-off between the Trump administration and the regime of Nicolás Maduro. China is Venezuela’s biggest customer for oil exports, which represent about 95% of Venezuela’s revenue. “These vessels, some of which are part of the shadow fleet serving Venezuela, continue to provide financial resources that fuel Maduro’s illegitimate narco-terrorist regime,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. “Maduro’s regime increasingly depends on a shadow fleet of worldwide vessels to facilitate sanctionable activity, including sanctions evasion, and to generate revenue for its destabilizing operations.” Of the vessels identified by the Treasury Department Wednesday, only one has been anywhere close to Venezuela lately, according to ship-tracking data — the Rosalind, which typically is involved in short-haul trips known as cabotage. But it’s possible that others have traveled without sending transponder data. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Mamdani Digs In on Progressive Agenda at NYC Mayor Inauguration
Bloomberg News New York City Reporter, Laura Nahmias discusses the challenges facing New York City's new Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Zohran Mamdani promised to lead New York City as a democratic socialist during a frigid inauguration ceremony on the steps of City Hall, a warning to those who believed he might moderate his positions after taking office. The nearly two-hour long event Thursday featured speeches by two of the US’s most liberal members of Congress, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. New York Attorney General Letitia James, a frequent target of President Donald Trump, also had a speaking role. The ceremony served as a not-so-subtle statement of resistance to White House policies from the nation’s largest city. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist,” Mamdani said in a roughly 30-minute address delivered to supporters, elected officials and media gathered in below-freezing weather. “I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.” His speech was the culmination of the 34-year-old’s improbable rise to power, reiterating many of the campaign promises that earned him a decisive victory in November’s election including free childcare and bus transportation as well as a vow to freeze rent for tenants in stabilized apartments.  “These policies are not simply about the costs we make free, but the lives we fill with freedom,” he said. “For too long in our city, freedom has belonged only to those who can afford to buy it. Our City Hall will change that.” When Mamdani formally took the oath of office at midnight Jan. 1 in an abandoned subway station, he became the city’s first mayor of South Asian descent, its first Muslim mayor and the youngest leader of the metropolis of nearly 8.5 million people in more than a century.  That diversity — and what it represents to the city often dubbed a melting pot of cultures and religions — was celebrated in Mamdani’s remarks but also by the new city comptroller, Mark Levine, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams who were also sworn in during the ceremony -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
