In this relaxing Christian history documentary, we journey into sixteenth-century Geneva to follow the complete story of John Calvin and how a small city of about ten thousand people became the center of a new Christianity.
Long after Geneva had broken with its prince-bishop, allied with Bern and abolished the Mass, a young French scholar arrived by accident when war closed the northern road. Jean Cauvin of Noyon wanted only a quiet life with his books, held no office, remained legally a foreigner until age fifty, was expelled by the city in 1538 and recalled on his own terms in 1541. His uneasy partnership with that proud, factional town would reshape how millions worshiped, prayed, raised children and organized churches.
We'll explore every major chapter, from the threat by Guillaume Farel in the inn and the first failed experiment, through exile in Strasbourg with Martin Bucer and the French refugee congregation, the Reply to Sadoleto, the marriage to Idelette de Bure, and the return to build the Ecclesiastical Ordinances with pastors, doctors, elders and deacons. Along the way, we'll discover the roles of Pierre Viret, Theodore Beza, Ami Perrin, Jerome Bolsec, Michael Servetus and Sebastian Castellio, the weekly Consistory, the French psalm singing, the printing presses, the Academy of 1559, the Genevan Psalter of 1562 and the Geneva Bible of 1560, and the burning at Champel in 1553 that has shadowed the story ever since.
From Noyon and Paris to Basel, Strasbourg and the lake of Geneva, we'll follow the complete tale of how paper, people and the open door made a reproducible system — confession, catechism, discipline, psalms, schools and sending — that could survive its founder and travel to Scotland, France, the Netherlands, England and New England.
Told in a calm and soothing style, this video invites you to relax, unwind, and drift off to sleep while experiencing the slow, human story of conviction, order, refuge and severity that built Reformed Geneva.
Please note that while the narrative is thoroughly based on historical research, its primary purpose is storytelling for entertainment and relaxation. As such, it is not intended to be used as a formal academic or scientific source.
