Jamaica’s Secret Emancipation Tradition
#TopHill #JamaicaEmancipationDay #DonkeyRace Hill Donkey Race: Inside Jamaica's Most Unique Emancipation Day Tradition | St. Catherine Every August 1st, while Jamaica celebrates Emancipation Day, the small community of Top Hill in St. Catherine hosts one of the island's most unique cultural events — a donkey race unlike anything else in the Caribbean. These aren't ordinary animals. Most of the year, these donkeys haul sugar cane for local farmers. Once crop season ends, the community turns their working animals into the stars of a festival that's grown from a backyard idea in 1992 into a beloved tradition drawing visitors from across Jamaica and the diaspora. In this video, we take you inside Top Hill on Emancipation Day — the community spirit, the Jamaican flag colors on full display, the police keeping the crowd safe, and the children's race that makes this one of the most family-friendly events on the island. This is more than a race. It's a celebration of freedom, family, and what it means to be Jamaican. Whether you're from Jamaica, part of the diaspora in the US, UK, or Canada, or simply curious about authentic Jamaican culture beyond the beaches and resorts, this is the real Jamaica — rural, joyful, and rooted in history. These 10 Caribbean Cities Were the Most Powerful, Now They're in Ruins
The Caribbean is sold as a place with no history, all beaches and resorts. That is a marketing decision, not the truth. In 1789 a single French colony in these islands produced roughly 40% of the world's sugar and 60% of its coffee, and the port cities that ran that trade were among the richest and most powerful on earth. Then volcanoes, earthquakes, revolutions, and the slow movement of money took them apart. These are 10 Caribbean cities that were once the most powerful in the world and now sit in ruins. The last one was the wealthiest of them all. In this video, we explore: → Falmouth, Jamaica, the most complete Georgian town anywhere in the Caribbean, built by sugar money and then left behind when the trade moved to Kingston and Montego Bay, its streets now half empty and slowly decaying → Brimstone Hill on St Kitts, the fortress called the Gibraltar of the West Indies, raised over roughly a century of enslaved labor and then abandoned by the British in 1853 → The frozen casino district of pre-revolution Havana, run by the American mob until 1959, when the whole business stopped almost overnight and never reopened → Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, the walled military capital of Spain's Caribbean empire, where La Fortaleza has served as a seat of power since the 1530s → Santo Domingo, the first European city in the Americas, where the first hospital on the continent now stands as a roofless stone shell and the first monastery was burned by Francis Drake in 1586 → Sans-Souci Palace, Haiti, built by a self-crowned king to rival Versailles and brought down by the 1842 earthquake → Plymouth, Montserrat, a capital buried in volcanic ash since the 1990s and still the only ghost town on earth that remains the legal capital of a territory → Saint-Pierre, Martinique, once called the Paris of the Caribbean, erased in minutes by Mount Pelee in 1902 with around 29,000 dead and only 2 confirmed survivors → Port Royal, Jamaica, once the storehouse and treasury of the West Indies, dropped into the sea by the 1692 earthquake and added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2025 And at number one: Cap-Haitien and the ruins of Saint-Domingue, capital of the richest colony the world had ever seen, a city that out-earned every rival around it before it was lost in the only successful slave revolution in history.
