Swing Through the Trees With Amazing Spider Monkeys | National Geographic
Spider monkeys have a prehensile tail, a fifth limb that plays an important role as they spend their days high up in the tropical forest canopy. As National Geographic grantee Andrés Link explains in this video showing spider monkeys in the Magdalena River Valley of Colombia, the monkeys use their tail for added safety as they grasp tree branches. Spider monkeys can even let go with their arms and hang by their tail as they play and wrestle with each other. Baby spider monkeys also wrap their tiny tail around their mother's tail for security as they ride around on her back. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. The millipede Motyxia sequoiae, which lives at the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada, glows bluish green—a warning to predators that the arthropod contains toxic cyanide. All 11 species and subspecies in the genus Motyxia glow, but those at lower elevations of the mountains glow less brightly. Scientists now think the bioluminescence first evolved as a way for millipedes at lower elevations to cope with the stress of living in a hot, dry environment and later evolved into a warning signal as the species moved up the mountains. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Which African river is the site of the proposed Grand Inga Dam which, if completed, would be the largest hydroelectric power-generating facility on Earth? Knowing the answer to that last, final-round question was enough to secure the victory in the 2015 National Geographic Bee. Fourteen-year-old Karan Menon, an eighth grader from New Jersey, is the winner of a $50,000 college scholarship, a trip to the Galápagos Islands, and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. Shriya Yarlagadda, a sixth grader from Michigan, came in second place. She missed an earlier question in the final round: Mariupol, a city located at the mouth of the Kalmius River, is located on what sea that is an arm of the Black Sea? Answer: Sea of Azov. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure.
