Iran War: US & Tehran Weigh Longer Truce, Oil Stabilizes | The Opening Trade 4/16/2026
The US and Iran are considering a two-week ceasefire extension, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive matters. Neither side desires restarting fighting, said another person familiar with the discussions, with the war having devastated Iran’s infrastructure and sent energy prices soaring, including in the US. Market expectations for a lengthening of the truce and an eventual formal end to the war have risen in the past two days, with many stock exchanges reversing their losses from the conflict and even hitting record highs. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won't find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Anna Edwards, Guy Johnson and Tom Mackenzie. Huge Whip Spiders Wear Nail Polish for Science | Expedition Raw
"You can only describe the tropical whip spider as evolution’s perfect design for an arthropod killing machine," says Verner Bingman, a behavioral neuroscientist and National Geographic grantee. While whip spiders are arachnids that fall under the arthropod phylum, they're not actually spiders. Whip spiders have eight legs, but the front two have evolved into antenniform legs that extend up to two feet long. These legs wiggle around like whips to gather sensory information, earning whip spiders their name. The arachnids also have appendages called pedipalps, which Bingman describes as being like "pliers with sharp teeth." ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 ➡ Watch all clips of Expedition Raw here: http://bit.ly/WatchmoreExpeditionRaw ➡ Get More Expedition Raw on Youtube: http://bit.ly/NGExpeditionRaw About Expedition Raw: Surprises, challenges, and amazing behind-the-scenes moments captured by National Geographic explorers in the field. Anthropic Says Mythos AI Model Available to UK Banks in 'Next Week'
Pip White, Anthropic's head of UK, Ireland and northern Europe, says the firm is planning to release its new Mythos model to UK financial institutions in the coming week. The artificial intelligence developer initially gave Mythos to a handful of Silicon Valley partners and Wall Street banks, arguing that the limited release was necessary because the model was so adept at spotting cybersecurity vulnerabilities. A Park Reborn: Charging Elephants | Nat Geo Live
The large animals of Gorongosa National Park were nearly wiped out during the Mozambican civil war. After the war had ended, people reported being charged and chased by the few traumatized elephants that survived. Cinematographer Bob Poole and his sister, Joyce, an elephant researcher, wondered if by running away from the elephants people were inadvertently provoking the magnificent animals. The Pooles teamed up to test their theory. Stocks Hit Record on Iran Ceasefire Hopes & TSMC Raises 2026 Outlook | Daybreak Europe 4/16/2026
Bloomberg Daybreak Europe is your essential morning viewing to stay ahead. Live from London, we set the agenda for your day, catching you up with overnight markets news from the US and Asia. And we'll tell you what matters for investors in Europe, giving you insight before trading begins. On today's show, global equities hit all-time highs as investors pile back into stocks on signs that Iran and the US may extend their ceasefire. Bloomberg understands they're considering a two-week extension to allow more time to negotiate a peace deal. The initial truce is due to expire next week. China's economy expanded at its fastest pace in three quarters, suggesting limited spillover so far from war in the Middle East. First quarter GDP expanded 5% from a year ago, powered by strong manufacturing and exports. And the world's top chipmaker TSMC has raised its revenue outlook for 2026. Its upbeat forecast underscores the resilience of AI chip demand, despite concerns about the economic impact of the Iran war. The main chipmaker to Nvidia and Apple is expecting revenue growth of more than 30% this year. TSMC also reported a surprisingly strong 58% surge in profit. Rediscovering Youth on the Colorado River | Short Film Showcase
In 1970, Forest Woodward’s father, Doug Woodward, led a trip down the Colorado River because water had always given him “a sense of wonder.” When Forest was born in 1986, Doug wrote his son a poem with the words “you always remember the path that leads you back to the important places.” In this short film produced by Gnarly Bay, Forest seeks to re-create his father's original trip down the river. By observing his father back in this important place, he hopes to learn some of life’s lessons. Seeing him “not just alive but living again,” Forest finds that “there is a hell of a lot more to come down the river” and that “the joy is in the journey.” Forest Woodward: http://www.forestwoodward.com/ Gnarly Bay: http://www.gnarlybay.com/ Q&A with Forest Woodward: http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/2015/08/05/short-film-showcase-rediscovering-youth-on-the-colorado-river/ ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: A curated collection of the most captivating documentary shorts from filmmakers around the world. Baby Sumatran Rhino Is Indonesia’s First Born in Captivity | National Geographic
Fewer than a hundred Sumatran rhinos remain in the wild. Recently declared extinct in Malaysia, the rhino is now found primarily on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. The young calf shown in this video was filmed at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park in 2012, just a few weeks after he became the fourth Sumatran rhino born in captivity in modern times. Named Andatu, he was also the first born in captivity within Indonesia. Nine Sumatran rhinos currently live in captivity worldwide. Sumatran rhinos, the world's smallest, are the only two-horned rhino in Asia; they're also hairy. And they're quite vocal, making a sound that Rasmus Gren Havmøller—a PhD student at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate at the University of Copenhagen—describes as resembling a humpback whale. The adult bull shown making the sound in this video was filmed at the Borneo Rhino Sanctuary in Sabah, Malaysia. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure.
