Super Coral That Can Survive Global Warming | National Geographic
Scientists have discovered that some coral species come through the effects of global warming unscathed. In 1998, the world lost 18 percent of its coral reefs because of global coral bleaching brought about by warmer and more acidic ocean water. Researchers at the University of Hawaii started a program to identify the resilient super corals, breed them, and introduce them to the ocean environment. They hope that the corals will thrive and stop the decline of the coral reef ecosystem. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Rep. Fields: We Need Term Limits on the Supreme Court
The US Supreme Court sharply limited the use of the Voting Rights Act to create predominantly Black or Hispanic election districts in a major ruling that buttresses Republican efforts to keep control of the House in this year’s midterms and beyond. Rep. Cleo Fields (D-LA) joins David Gura and Christina Ruffini on Bloomberg This Weekend to discuss. Voting 6-3 along ideological lines, the justices on Wednesday rejected a Louisiana congressional map that was drawn with a second majority-Black district after a lower court found an earlier set of lines to be discriminatory. Writing for the court, Justice Samuel Alito said the current map was an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander.” The ruling undercuts what had been the most significant remaining part of the Voting Rights Act, a law passed in 1965 to address rampant discrimination against Black voters. Although the court didn’t strike down the law or explicitly overrule any precedents, the majority set up a demanding new test for those seeking to create heavily minority districts. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Ivory-Like "Helmets" Are Driving These Birds to Extinction | National Geographic
The helmeted hornbill is a striking bird native to Southeast Asia. Intense poaching for its ivory-like casque—the helmetlike structure protruding from its bill—and loss of its tropical forest habitat have recently led the conservation status of this hornbill to make a rare jump from "near threatened" directly to "critically endangered." Nigel Collar of BirdLife International and hornbill researcher Yokyok Hadiprakarsa discuss the alarming situation that has led this once common bird to become a rare sight. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. The Armenian Massacre Still Haunts Its Last Survivors 100 Years Later | National Geographic
Starting in 1915, 500,000 to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians living in Turkey were killed or expelled from their ancestral lands, where they'd lived mainly peaceably with the Turks for centuries. Armenians call the slaughter genocide; Turks say it was the consequence of the larger war, in which many groups, including Turks, suffered terribly. Five of the few remaining Armenian survivors reflect on the horrors they faced fleeing their homeland as children and on what life has been like for them in exile. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Two eaglets recently hatched at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Known for now as DC2 and DC3, the bald eagle chicks have been enjoying their first meals of fish, which the parents have been taking turns collecting. The nesting pair, named "Mr. President" and the "First Lady," had their first eaglet a year ago in a nest at the top of a tulip poplar, which prompted the installation of two video cameras. Volunteers organized by the American Eagle Foundation take turns operating the cameras as people from around the world watch live. See the adorable highlights from DC2 and DC3's first days. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Las Vegas Is Gambling on Its Own Reinvention
Tourism is down, lower-income visitors are tightening their wallets, and online gambling means the casino now fits in your pocket. But Las Vegas isn't panicking. It's doubling down on what you can't get on a screen. The Tao Group is building a 46,000-square-foot dayclub on the Strip, its flagship nightclub is posting record revenue year after year, and the city's fast permitting process lets it rebuild itself faster than anywhere else in America. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
