He Left Gangs, Drugs, and Violence Behind to Mentor Kids in Juárez | National Geographic
Diego Montejano grew up in a poor neighborhood of Juárez, Mexico, at the height of the drug wars that ravaged the city from 2008 to 2012. During that time Juárez was considered the most dangerous city in the world, with a reported homicide rate of 10 people a day in 2010. Montejano spent his adolescence packaging drugs for the gangs that ran the city and fighting on the streets, using stones and bullets. Like many other children in Juárez, he'd completed just middle school before the streets claimed him. Montejano says that it was like living with two warring personalities: "The Bear" foundpleasure in violence and anger, and "Diego" knew that there would be negative consequences for his actions. But since the violence ebbed in 2012, he has found solace in art, music, and writing as he takes the first tentative steps to turn his life around. Now 19 years old, Montejano works with children and teenagers in Juárez, teaching them how to draw, paint, and rap to encourage them to follow a path different from the one he took. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. TIL: Mount St. Helens Has a Baby Volcano Inside It | Today I Learned

The volcano remains active today, even as events are being held at the mountain to mark the 36th anniversary of the disaster. Proving that it still has power, over the past few years, Mount St. Helens has had "a baby volcano growing in its crater," says Stephanie Grocke, a volcanologist at the Smithsonian Institution and a National Geographic explorer. Between 2004 and 2008, enough molten rock oozed out of the crater to pave a seven-lane highway from New York City to Portland, Oregon, notes Grocke. While the growth of the lava dome doesn't mean there is an imminent threat, it is a reminder that Mount St. Helens is still very much alive. "The volcano is still living and breathing," says Grocke. Manú National Park, deep in the Peruvian rain forest, is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The park and surrounding areas are home to some 10 percent of the world's bird species, countless insect species still unknown to science, and about as many tree species as are found in all of North America. It is also home to "uncontacted" tribes such as the Mascho-Piro who have chosen to live in isolation for a century, a few of whom are slowly beginning to make contact with outsiders. National Geographic photographer Charlie Hamilton James ventured into Manú National Park to photograph life in this remarkable park for the June 2016 issue of National Geographic magazine. Hear James tell stories from his time living in a small village among the Matsigenka people who are beginning to make contact with some of the isolated people living in the rain forests—and enjoy his stunning photos of the people and wildlife of the Amazon. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Nat Geo Live: http://bit.ly/MoreNatGeoLive About Nat Geo Live (National Geographic Live): Thought-provoking presentations by today's leading explorers, scientists, and photographers. Could GOP Infighting Hurt Republicans in November?
Marc Short, former Chief of Staff to Vice President Mike Pence and now Chairman of Advancing American Freedom, says heavy Republican spending against fellow GOP candidates could "demoralize" voters and backfire in November, as members grow increasingly fearful of crossing President Trump. He also warns rising gas prices and higher costs for farmers—including fertilizer and trade pressures tied to tariffs—could weigh on voters in Middle America and threaten Republican strength in traditionally safe districts.
