California Assemblage art was born out of the Beat Generation of artists and poets and was most prominent in the 1950s and '60s; the art form is a process in which a work of art is made from altered, found objects and collage. Bill Czappa came across California Assemblage through pure curiosity and fun. A TV repairman by trade and a sculptor by passion, the Burbank, California-based Czappa has been creating some of the most amusing artwork you'll ever see for more than 20 years. In this short film by Serena Creative with music by Emoto Music, Czappa shows us how he came to create some of his most iconic sculptures and the costs to keep his artwork in motion. These Rare Giraffes Were Killed Just for Their Tails (Exclusive Video) | National Geographic
The killing of three rare Kordofan giraffes inspired a filmmaker to transform his anger into action. David Hamlin was on assignment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo when he saw a female and two male giraffes peacefully making their way through the tall grass. The next morning he learned that the three animals were found shot and mutilated. Shocked by the news and compelled to uncover the truth, Hamlin decided to visit the site of the killings to document this horrific act. Accompanied by armed rangers from the nonprofit conservation organization African Parks and the Congolese Parks Authority ICCN, he ventured through the volatile grounds of Garamba National Park. There he learned that the giraffes were killed for something worth thousands of U.S. dollars: their tails. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for critically acclaimed storytelling around science and exploration. Could Biking in a City Be Bad for Your Health? | National Geographic
For some people, biking to work is a choice to live a healthier lifestyle. But could their daily two-wheeled commute do more harm than good? That's the question researchers at Columbia University are trying to answer as part of an ongoing air pollution study in New York City. In partnership with WNYC public radio, the school has been recruiting bicyclists from around the city to wear special monitoring devices on their morning commutes. From the data collected, which include GPS locations and particulate-matter concentrations, the researchers are able to map out air pollution exposure levels along the routes. Bikers are of special interest, as they breathe deeper and ride close to traffic, one of many pollution sources in the city. Though still in its early stages, the study could have implications for city planning that would keep the health of bicycle commuters in mind. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. A 12-Year-Old Horse Jockey Races Towards His Dream | Short Film Showcase
Dylan is a 12-year-old boy who strives to become a professional jockey. One of his first races was the Glenbeigh Races, a prestigious grassroots horse racing event in Glenbeigh, a rural southwestern area of Ireland. His training involves boxing, and his inspiration is supplemented by quotes from Rocky IV. Because he's such a lightweight, he has to add five stone (70 pounds) of lead in his saddle to give him a better control of his horse. This short documentary by Just So London follows Dylan while he trains to be the best against "bigger and stronger, and taller and older" boys, and how he's "going to be something serious in the making." Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible. In this week’s Today I Learned, National Geographic Emerging Explorer Panut Hadisiswoyo shares just how particular orangutans can be about their sleeping arrangements. Whether for a quick nap or a full night’s sleep, orangutans build treetop nests to bed down in. These master engineers design for stability, but also comfort—some even fashion blankets and pillows. Orangutans build new nests every day, so it’s fortunate they can whip one up in just a few minutes. These treetop nests come with a lot of perks, but the biggest might be a good night’s rest. Scientists believe higher quality sleep may have improved orangutan’s cognitive abilities and given them an evolutionary edge.
