The carcass recently washed ashore on the Dinagat Islands in the Philippines, measuring about 20 feet in length and weighing more than 4,000 pounds. Only the road in this case is Scotland’s Forth Estuary, an arm of the North Sea near Edinburgh, and the puppy is an energetic gray seal, probably a juvenile. After tailing kayaker Alistair Forrest and his companion for about a mile, the seal took advantage of a break in the paddling to hop aboard Forrest's kayak. There, the sleek marine mammal sprawled out as if ready to come along. Forrest and his companion voice their amazement at the unplanned wildlife encounter. Anthropic PBC raised $65 billion in a funding round that valued the artificial intelligence company at $965 billion including the new investment, eclipsing rival OpenAI’s value for the first time. The funding, announced Thursday, was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. Each of the lead investors put in more than $2 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Sequoia declined to comment. The other three firms did not respond to a request for comment. That's the reality for children in Atule'er village, located on a mountaintop in a remote part of southwestern China's Sichuan Province. It's a treacherous climb, which until recently had consisted of aging bamboo ladders. Now, the bamboo has been replaced with steel, making the climb safer and faster, though still difficult. Children typically stay in dorms during the week, making the ascent to return home to the village on weekends. When Lucy jumps onto the swing, causing it to rock towards Ricky, the latter stiffens and keels over in fright. His temporary paralysis lasts only a few moments before he jumps back up, unfazed. Their bizarre display of fear appears humorous and only harms them if they faint from a tall surface. However, the goats are still susceptible to stress if purposefully frightened. This strain of livestock are properly called Myotonic goats but they go by a number of common names, including: wooden leg goats, Tennessee fainting goats, stiff leg goats, and nervous goats. They get their name from a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, which causes their muscles to briefly stiffen after they are startled. The breed is one of only a few types of goats native to North America and, as their name might indicate, they are commonly found in Tennessee and neighboring states in the South. Mother macaques bear one baby every 20 months or so and do most of the parenting. Even the tiniest macaque youngsters in Tangkoko have a lot of freedom to play in and explore the forest, but they don’t stray far from their mothers. If hunters take a mother for meat, they may also capture her offspring for the pet trade. Faced with the illegal logging of tropical forest for agriculture—which is fragmenting their habitat—the monkeys are suffering serious decline. Meanwhile conservationists are fighting government plans to open wildlands to roads and industries. Advocates believe that teaching children to see the value of a forest full of monkeys will bring lasting benefits and help reverse the decline. NASA scientists tried to figure out the answer after the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope recorded gamma rays, the highest-energy form of light, originating from solar flares on the far side of the sun on three separate occasions. NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft captured images of each event from the far side, allowing scientists to connect these "beyond-the-limb" solar flares with observations from Fermi. Studying the sun may help scientists predict solar flares, which, when aimed at Earth, can cause both beautiful auroras and communications system disruptions.
