National Geographic Explorer Jeff Marlow is working to understand the ways of a strange deep-sea world. Marlow, a geobiologist, analyzes sediment from the ocean floor that contains secrets to forces that are shaping our planet. Around the ocean’s many seeps of methane gas live colonies of microbes that feed on the methane. The gas is a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. Observing the interaction between the tiny life forms and their unusual food source adds to the understanding of natural climate factors. Marlow worked with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Alvin submersible team to study methane seeps and microbes, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Make sure to learn more about the Alvin submersible at https://vimeo.com/album/4261384/ Footage provided by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Ocean Exploration Trust. Past surveys have been based only on breeding pairs, so the increase could be attributed at least partly to counting non-breeding penguins, which tend to be out foraging at sea. While the news of the large Adélie population may be cause for celebration, scientists warn that shrinking ice and warming waters could threaten penguin habitat and prey availability in the long term. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible. Scientist Arthur Middleton, photographer Joe Riis, and artist James Prosek follow these remarkable ungulates on their journey as they trek over steep mountain passes and ford treacherous river crossings. Along the way, this band of explorers meet backcountry guides and cattle ranchers whose lives are intricately tied with the fate of the elk and other migratory species that live in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Filmmaker Jenny Nichols captures the action and skillfully edits the many narratives into one cohesive piece that blends art, conservation, and science. Trump Says Deal Will ‘Work Out Well’ Even as US, Iran Clash | The Opening Trade 6/1/2026
US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran over an interim peace deal will “work out well,” even as the countries’ forces clashed again near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump, in a Truth Social post late on Sunday US time, said constant speculation over whether he’ll agree to a deal — which will likely see the two sides extend their ceasefire by around two months, with Iran reopening the strait and the US lifting a blockade of Iranian ports — weren’t helping. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won't find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Anna Edwards, Guy Johnson and Tom Mackenzie.
