Artificial Female Reproductive Tract Opens New Health Frontiers | National Geographic
A new testing device may lead to better medical treatment for women. Called EVATAR—a portmanteau of Eve and avatar—the machine is a miniature version of the female reproductive system, with actual human tissue in an artificial liquid medium. Female human body chemistry is different from that of males, but historically, medical testing has failed to investigate how treatment outcomes can be different based on sex. The default for pharmaceutical trials has been to use male physiology, a practice that has sometimes led to bad or even disastrous results after a drug is approved. One advantage of EVATAR is that it can simulate the entire menstrual cycle with the appropriate changes in chemistry. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. How Did These Ancient Bugs Attract Mates? Rare Amber Find Tells Us | National Geographic
A discovery of three damselflies in amber from Myanmar has given researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences a rare view into the way these tiny 100 million-year-old animals lived. Modern damselflies, close relatives of dragonflies, have a complicated courtship ritual. As reported by the scientists, in these fossil specimens, large spotted structures on the males’ legs would have been an aid in signaling for a mate, in a function similar to a bird’s showy plumage or a deer’s antlers. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Could you survive nine days in the rainforest alone? Maykool Coroseo Acuña did after he wandered away from his campsite in Bolivia's Madidi National Park. Rangers and guides searched for eight to ten hours per day for a week, and after nine days in the jungle, Maykool was found less than a mile from the campground. He was dehydrated, and had bug bites, botflies, and spines stuck in his skin.
