The struggle was recorded in a homeowner's bathroom near Melbourne, Australia. Scorpions are commonly found throughout Australia, and they are relatively harmless to humans although they can inflict a painful sting. Even though the scorpion had the advantage of size, it couldn't escape from the sticky web made by the smaller predator. Experts hypothesize that the hawk was taken as a potential meal after hatching or while still in its shell. Its hungry squawks for food and open beak may have prompted the eagles to feed it as one of their own. The hawk chick must next survive its growing step siblings. Experts estimate the chick to be about four weeks old meaning it could attempt to fly in the coming week. A new study found that one coral-eating fish has mucus-secreting lips that protects it during feeding. The tubelip wrasses (Labropsis australis) developed fleshy, protruding lips that produce a thin layer of mucus that protects them from barbed or venomous cells found on the coral’s surface. The lips allow the fish to suck edible material off coral in short “kissing” motions. Because of corals' sharp skeletons and presence of protective surface cells, there are only a few coral-eating fish. Four Tanzanian children lost their limbs in vicious attacks because they have albinism, a genetic condition that results in the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. In parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, superstition leads some to believe that the body parts of those with albinism can bring wealth and success. Many people with albinism have been maimed or killed so that their body parts could be used in rituals and potions. They also face severe discrimination. When Donald Trump returned to the White House in 2025, his administration rapidly dismantled much of the US foreign aid system, slashing billions of dollars in assistance to the developing world. The cuts forced some HIV clinics to scale back services, disrupted vaccination and disease-monitoring programs and left refugee agencies scrambling to replace lost funding. Studies estimate hundreds of thousands more lives have been lost as a result of the US cuts, with millions more at risk in the coming years. In the aftermath of that shift, the US has sealed more than 30 new “America First” deals with recipient countries that, in a sharp break from historical US practices, require mineral and health data access in exchange for aid. Mozambique signed a five-year, $1.8 billion agreement that is to support HIV and malaria programs while requiring the country sharply increase domestic health spending. The southern African country previously received between $500 million and $800 million annually from the US — meaning the new agreement represents a significant reduction even before inflation and rising disease burdens are considered. See rare video of a swimming great horned owl. Hikers walking through a canyon in Lake Powell between Arizona and Utah stumbled upon the rare sight. It's likely a young great horned owl and still has some of its nestling feathers. Great horned owls often roost on cliff ledges, so it's possible the young owl fell into the water from its nest. Seeing an owl swim is unusual, and they have no way to defend themselves while in the water. The cuttlefish would bend their arms and move them sharply like they were legs, and also develop dark spots on their skin. The researchers are not certain why the cuttlefish pretend to be hermit crabs but suggest it could be a form of defense useful in hunting small fish. Cuttlefish and other cephalopods are known to use camouflage and mimicry in the wild. The researchers hope to study the cuttlefish further to confirm whether the pharaoh cuttlefish are indeed imitating hermit crabs.
