On Oct. 2, NASA held a briefing at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, to preview a trio of spacewalks in October to perform maintenance outside the International Space Station. Expedition 53 Commander Randy Bresnik of NASA will lead all three spacewalks, joined on Oct. 5 and 10 by Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei, also of NASA. Flight Engineer Joe Acaba of NASA will join Bresnik on Oct. 18 for the third spacewalk. NASA TV coverage of the spacewalks will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 5, 10 and 18. Each spacewalk is scheduled to start at approximately 8:05 a.m., however, the spacewalks may begin earlier if the crew is running ahead of schedule. Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 53 Commander Randy Bresnik of NASA discussed life and work aboard the orbital laboratory during an in-flight educational event Oct. 2 with students at The Citadel STEM Center at the Laing Middle School near Charleston, South Carolina. Bresnik holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and an honorary doctorate in aeronautics from The Citadel. He launched to the station in July and will remain on board through mid-December. Security forces in Borno State in Nigeria are searching for 100 teenage girls abducted by suspected members of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The abductions come a day after 71 people were killed in two explosions at a bus station in the capital Abuja. Will Ross reports

It will take least 70 years for all children in Africa to have access to primary school education according to a report from UNESCO. Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the worst affected regions-- with Nigeria having the highest number of children without a primary school place. Kenya and Burkina Faso are also listed amongst the top ten . Girls are still more likely to miss out on school than boys and this is more prevalent among disadvantaged, rural families. We spoke to a teacher in the Nigerian city of Lagos and here is what she thinks needs to be done to improve the educational system on the continent.

Evelyn Farkas, executive director of the McCain Institute, discusses the role the late Senator Lindsey Graham played in helping persuade President Trump to maintain support for Ukraine and other "front-line democracies." Farkas says passing tougher Russia sanctions would be the best tribute to Graham and could put meaningful pressure on Moscow by cutting into its oil revenue. She also says the US and Israel are "not fully aligned" on Iran, arguing that Washington is focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz while Israel seeks to weaken Iran more permanently.
