On March 21, 2022, the number of known exoplanets passed 5,000 according to the NASA Exoplanet Archive. This 360-degree animation and sonification tracks humanity's discovery of the planets beyond our solar system over time. Turning NASA data into sounds allows users to hear the pace of discovery with additional information conveyed by the notes themselves. As each exoplanet is discovered, a circle appears at its position in the sky. The size of the circle indicates the relative size of the planet's orbit and the color indicates which planet detection method was used to discover it. The music is created by playing a note for each newly discovered world. The pitch of the note indicates the relative orbital period of the planet. Planets that take a longer time to orbit their stars are heard as lower notes, while planets that orbit more quickly are heard as higher notes. Exoplanet detection methods: radial velocity (pink); transit (purple); imaging (orange); microlensing (green); timing variations (red); orbital brightness modulation (yellow); astrometry (gray); disk kinematics (blue). Remember the Charles Town Maroons in Portland? I featured them some years ago on my website in this article: https://www.my-island-jamaica.com/jamaican_maroon.html Well they held their 13th annual Charles Town Maroon Celebration & Festival, June 23 and 24, 2021 Although a virtual affair, the hub of the event was staged at the ASAFU YARD, their home, rooted right there in Portland. The Asafu yard is where the maroon warriors in the past would gather to strategize, dance and commune with ancestors in preparation for battles. According to Dr. Marcus Goffe, it evolved from the vision of former colonel Frank Lumbsden, who wanted an annual event to celebrate maroon independence and to highlight and recall the struggles and success of the Jamaican maroons. It was an insightful affair with presentations from individuals and other maroon communities around the world, including, Belize, New Zealand, Haiti, Surinam, Sierra Leone etc. This year, the focus was on Quao, the second behind Nanny, and the main ancestor for the Charleston Maroons. Of course, there was the traditional blowing of the abeng, dancing drumming and dancing but also... ▶presentations from the Taino community, ▶presentations on the history of the maroons and the treaties, ▶drum tributes, ▶academic discussions, as well as presentations on research and reasonings from University of Colorado, RMIT in Australia, University Of Rhode Island, University of Virginia, and more. Taiwan is one of the most advanced democracies in the world. It’s also one of the most threatened. Despite being one of the world’s leading economies, having its own president, government, flag and anthem, no country recognises it. The problem is that China has always considered Taiwan to be one of its own provinces. Even today, President Xi Jinping does not rule out using force to claim it back. But what’s different now is that both sides seem to be becoming more militant… For decades, the majority of people in Taiwan wanted nothing to change. They were careful to avoid offending China while enjoying the freedoms and lifestyle of not living under a dictatorship. Wayne is one of those Taiwanese people who wants this status quo to continue. His business depends on China but he doesn’t want reunification. “Everyone knows it, Taiwan is an independent country… but you don’t have to shout it from the rooftops, that’s all…”. But since the 2014 Sunflower movement, a majority of young people are increasingly demonstrating for independence, even if it means China cracking down. Having seen what happened in Hong Kong, they believe they need to be more proactive. “We are a democratic and free country. Whereas they are an authoritarian country … we must oppose China and become independent.” explains Roy. On the other side CUPP, an extremist pro-Chinese party, is actively pushing for reunification. Founded by a mafia gang leader, members have been convicted for attacking and harassing independence supporters. Today the Taiwanese are at a turning point in their history. Will the de facto independence of their country become official? Or will Beijing do everything in their power to annex the small island?
