In this relaxing Christian history documentary for sleep, we journey into the remarkable life of Justinian the Great, the Balkan peasant's nephew who became Roman emperor from 527 to 565 and tried to rebuild Christian Rome as one Christian order of empire, law, and church.
Long after the western throne had fallen in 476, the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople remained rich, armed, and coherent, with a full treasury, formidable walls, and two vulnerable doors on the Danube and Persia. Joined by his wife Theodora, crowned Augusta and legal co-ruler, Justinian set out to restore what had been lost, guided by his belief that priesthood and imperial authority were God's two great gifts meant to work in harmony.
We'll explore every major chapter of his reign, from the compilation of Roman law into the Corpus Iuris Civilis under Tribonian to the Nika riots of 532, the building and dedication of Hagia Sophia in 537, the reconquest of Vandal Africa under Belisarius, the nineteen-year Gothic War for Italy and the sieges of Rome under Wittigis and Totila, the Eternal Peace and war with Khosrow of Persia and the sack of Antioch, the Plague of Justinian in 542, and the struggle with Pope Vigilius over the Three Chapters and the Fifth Ecumenical Council in 553. Along the way, we'll discover the roles of Theodora, Belisarius, Procopius, John the Cappadocian, Totila, Khosrow, and Vigilius.
From Constantinople to Carthage, Ravenna, Rome, and Antioch, we'll follow the complete tale of ambition, faith, endurance, and cost that left behind his law, his dome, and his empire, and helped shape the medieval Orthodox East and much of Europe that came after.
Told in a calm and soothing style, this video invites you to relax, unwind, and drift off to sleep while experiencing the timeless story of Justinian and the world of late antique Christian Rome.
