US Destroys 5 Iranian Oil Tankers as Brent Nears $100 | Horizons Middle East & Africa 9/9/2026
The US says it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers as the conflict with Tehran escalates across the Gulf, pushing Brent crude close to $100 a barrel. President Donald Trump says Iran will not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, while Tehran retaliates with strikes on Jordan and says it targeted two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.
The Houthis claim attacks on facilities in Abha, Najran and Jazan, prompting Saudi Arabia to halt operations at energy sites. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are telling Asian buyers to increase oil storage as concerns over regional supplies intensify. Oil prices climb as the Iran war and Houthi attacks add to fears over energy flows.
In global markets, Asian technology stocks rise even as crude prices climb. Chinese inflation revives as the oil-price spike and AI boom feed into prices, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent puts yen traders on alert.
