Hyenas do something amazing: they laugh!
Why do hyenas laugh?
Hyenas and their laughter, it's something surprisingly relatable. When they're stressed, they let out these giggles that sound almost human. Ever felt that way? I have. What's interesting is, the dominant individuals have this discrete giggle, while the underdogs sound a bit more…crazy. Their laughter is unique tells a whole story – their age, who they are, and where they stand in the social hierarchy.
But they don’t laugh when something funny happens, but when they feel threaten, under attack, or even frustrated, when, for example, someone steel its food.
Now, we're not exactly sure how they use all this info, but here's the amazing part: they can figure out who's who and where they are without even looking up. And get this: they've got at least 14 different calls, each with its own meaning. How cool is that?
