In this relaxing Christian history documentary for sleep, we follow the complete story of Francis of Assisi, the merchant's son who renounced wealth to live the Gospel literally and sparked a movement that changed Christianity.
Born in Assisi in 1181 or 1182 to the cloth merchant Pietro di Bernardone, Francis dreamed of knighthood until war, imprisonment and illness emptied his old life. Led among the lepers, called by the crucifix at San Damiano to repair my house, and struck by Christ's command to take no gold, he stripped himself naked before the bishop, gathered lesser brothers at the Porziuncola, and won from Pope Innocent III a fateful bargain of preaching permission in exchange for obedience.
We'll explore every major chapter of the Franciscan story, from the first companions Bernard of Quintavalle and Giles and the Chapter of Mats to Clare of Assisi and the Poor Ladies at San Damiano, the missions to Germany, Spain and England, the Fifth Crusade camp at Damietta and the meeting with Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil, the resignation in 1220 and the confirmed Rule of 1223, the living nativity at Greccio, the stigmata at La Verna, the Canticle of the Sun, the Testament commanding observance without gloss, and death at the Porziuncola in 1226. Along the way, we'll follow canonization in 1228 and the great basilica, the century-long war over poverty through the Spirituals, the burnings at Marseille in 1318 and Pope John XXII, the official legend of Bonaventure and the destruction of earlier lives in 1266, the wolf of Gubbio in the Fioretti, and the modern rediscovery of Francis's own writings.
From a ruined chapel below Assisi to houses across Europe, universities at Paris and Oxford, and missions reaching toward Morocco and the Holy Land, we'll follow how radical poverty became an enduring institution, and how memory, legend and scholarship reshaped the saint in every century after.
Told in a calm and soothing style, this video invites you to relax, unwind, and drift off to sleep while experiencing the quiet, remarkable life of Francis, Clare, and the lesser brothers, and the world they left behind.
