While its beaches attract numerous tourists, crime rates escalate inland, with over 26 murders per 100,000 residents annually. The province's strategic location makes it a conduit for drug smuggling, contributing to a high incarceration rate. One notable correctional facility is the Penitenciária de Segurança Máxima Criminalista Geraldo Beltrão, a maximum-security prison in João Pessoa's Mangabeira neighborhood. Built in the 1940s, it houses over 200 high-security inmates, including gang members and murderers. Among them is Lindon, a gang leader who ascended the ranks within the prison but now faces threats from rivals.
