China Just Found The UNTHINKABLE In Jamaica’S Red Mud... And It Changes EVERYTHING!
Jamaica sits on top of an estimated 2 billion tons of bauxite one of the largest reserves of the ore used to produce aluminum anywhere on earth. For over 70 years, foreign corporations extracted that resource, processed it overseas, and returned modest royalties to the island while capturing the full manufacturing value themselves.
That arrangement is now under pressure from multiple directions at once.
The United States has allowed its domestic aluminum smelting capacity to collapse. By 2025, only around four to six primary smelters remained operational across the entire country. America now imports over 75% of its primary aluminum a material the US Department of Defense has formally classified as critical to national security. The supply chain it depends on runs through politically unstable Guinea in West Africa and through refining infrastructure with significant Chinese involvement.
China, meanwhile, controls approximately 60% of global aluminum production and has spent two decades building economic relationships across the Caribbean including in Jamaica through infrastructure financing that creates long-term leverage.
Jamaica sits at the centre of this tension. Ninety miles from Florida, it holds bauxite reserves that both Washington and Beijing understand are strategically significant. The decisions made in Kingston over the coming years about who to partner with, on what terms, and how to structure the industry will shape the island's economic trajectory for a generation.
This documentary covers the full story: how Jamaica's bauxite industry was built by American corporations in the 1950s, how Jamaica tried to claim more of its own wealth under Prime Minister Michael Manley in 1974 and what happened as a result, why the US aluminum crisis has changed Jamaica's negotiating position, what China's infrastructure strategy in the Caribbean actually means in practice, and what the international examples of Botswana, Norway, and Venezuela tell us about how natural resource wealth can be managed well or wasted entirely.
This is not a political video. It does not advocate for any government, party, or investment position. It is an evidence-based examination of Jamaica's strategic economic position in 2026.
If you are Jamaican, Caribbean, or simply someone who follows where global industrial power is shifting this is the story you need to understand.
