COST OF LIVING IN JAMAICA || Black River Market | First Town in the Caribbean with Electricity!”
Did you know that Black River was the first town in the entire Western Hemisphere to have electricity? 💡 The famous Waterloo House was powered by a logwood plant way back in 1893! The town also had Jamaica’s first telephone exchange, and was home to the country’s first licensed motor car — talk about history!
Black River’s early wealth came from the logwood industry, which produced a blue-black dye that Europe couldn’t get enough of. And of course, it’s now known worldwide for the Black River Safari, where you can spot wildlife — including some friendly crocodiles 🐊
