Humans black out underwater. Seals don’t. Here’s the reason why. You’d think humans would know when they’re running out of oxygen. But we actually…don’t. That’s why human free divers sometimes black out before making it back up. We can’t actually sense our oxygen levels. Seals, on the other hand, do. And it might be the reason they never drown. Most mammals, including us, rely on rising CO2 levels in our blood to know when to breathe. But seals? They can feel their oxygen levels drop and adjust their dives to avoid running out. Scientists just discovered this by testing wild gray seals in a controlled experiment. When oxygen levels changed, the seals changed their behavior too and adapted how long they stayed underwater. Without stress, without panic. This shows they weren’t just reacting to CO2, they actually knew how much oxygen they had left! Imagine if we had that ability! Nature always has something to teach us.
