Breaking: Trinidad Just FOUND The BIGGEST Oil Discovery In The Caribbean History
In September 2025, Trinidad and Tobago put 26 offshore blocks on the market — the largest auction of ocean floor in its history. Twenty-two of them received no bid at all.
Five weeks earlier, ExxonMobil had quietly signed for a piece of that same seabed. Not through the auction. Around it. Seven blocks welded into one, 7,165 square kilometres, in water over 2,000 metres deep — a block physically larger than Trinidad and Tobago itself. And it took 100% of it, with no partner and no shared risk.
If the geology is what Exxon suspects, the company has signalled it could invest up to $21.7 billion. Trinidad's entire annual economy is worth roughly $26.5 billion.
So why did the most selective deepwater operator on earth want the one asset nobody else in the industry would bid a dollar for — and why did it want all of it?
This documentary answers that question. It covers the 1866 discovery at Aripero that made Trinidad an oil producer three years before Standard Oil existed on paper, and the yellow fever death that froze the industry for thirty years. The collapse from 230,000 barrels a day in the 1970s to 54,209 in early 2026. The Beryl well that found oil where the textbooks said only gas existed. The dismantling of Atlantic LNG Train 1. The Dragon gas field sitting 22 kilometres from Trinidad's own platform, held hostage for years by a licence issued in Washington. The US destroyer that docked in Port of Spain in October 2025, and what Venezuela did the very next night. And the January 2026 operation in Caracas that removed, in a single morning, the political obstacle that had blocked Trinidad's gas strategy for the better part of a decade.
And the reason this is going out now: Exxon's seismic vessel finished its survey at the end of July 2026. The Prime Minister told the public on 10 August that she expects the results by the end of this month.
The answer to the biggest question in Caribbean energy is landing in days.
