A classic Olympic moment as the USA's Otis Davis and Germany's Carl Kaufmann set an equal Olympic record in the men's 400m event at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
Otis Davis made it to the Olympic Games for the first time later than many athletes. Arriving at the Rome 1960 Games at the age of 28, he was the oldest of the 4x400m team, but also one of the fastest.
In the individual men's 400 metres final, he was facing the world record holder, who was considered by many the favourite, Carl Kaufmann from Germany. However, this time it was the American who would surprise the world and clinch a photo-finish win against the German.
Both Kaufmann and Davis crossed the line clocking 44.9 seconds, as the systems only recorded up to tenths of seconds. With that time, they both became holders of the new Olympic and world record, breaking for the first time the 45 seconds barrier for the 400m.
After the photo-finish analysis, Otis Davis was confirmed as the Olympic champion as his torso had passed the finish line just ahead of Carl Kaufmann.
The bronze medal was won by South African Malcolm Clive Spence who beat Milkha Singh from India by the smallest timed margin (45.5s vs 45.6s).
