Markets: Asian Stocks Rebound After Worst Day on Record
Shares in Asia rebounded after posting a historic loss, as Japan led gains on expectations that it will get priority in US trade talks. Shares in Hong Kong and China advanced as state-linked funds scooped up assets and the central bank promised loans to help stabilize the market. Bloomberg's Mark Cranfield reports. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Canada Beat USA To Ice Hockey Gold - Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Full highlights from the men's final of the Ice Hockey tournament where Canada beat USA 3-2 to win the gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Sometimes sport throws up events so remarkable that they wouldn't be out of place in the plot of a Hollywood film. Over the years, the Olympic Games has often been the stage for such dramas and, on the final day of Vancouver 2010, fans across the world were treated to yet another storyline that will go down in Olympic - and Canadian - history. But even the most imaginative Hollywood scriptwriter would have struggled to match the drama that unfolded at Canada Hockey Place, as the hosts and the USA contested the final of the men's ice hockey. A Jonathan Toews goal in the first period, and Corey Perry's strike in the second, had given Canada a 2-0 lead, but Ryan Kesler struck back to set up a tense third period, as the hosts sought to win a record eighth ice hockey gold and the USA went in search of their first Olympic title since 1980. With Canada still leading 2-1 - and with just 90 seconds remaining in the third period - the USA replaced goalkeeper Ryan Miller with an extra attacker as they chased an elusive equaliser. The hosts were forced into some frantic defending as the clock ticked down, but their resolve - and the hearts of millions of Canadian fans - was finally broken with just 24 seconds left, as Zach Parise slotted home to take the game into overtime. Each team was reduced to four outfield players for the extra 20-minute period and the game became far more open as the sides went in search of a winning sudden-death goal. And, after just eight minutes, the moment came for someone to etch their name into the history books. Fittingly, the opening fell to Canadian idol Sidney Crosby, who had missed an earlier one-on-one opportunity to put his side 3-1 up at the end of the third period. The NHL superstar had been relatively quiet throughout the tournament, but, when the chance came to cement his position in Canadian hockey folklore, he wasn't going to fluff his lines again. Receiving the puck from Jarome Iginla, Crosby took a quick touch before firing low past Miller, prompting wild celebrations across the country. Biondi, Jacobs, Dalbey, Jager Win 4x100m Relay Gold For USA - Seoul 1988 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games as the USA's 4x100m relay team of Biondi, Jacobs, Dalbey and Jager win gold in the pool. It's one of sport's crying injustices that American swimmer Matt Biondi is remembered as much for one infamous defeat as he is for his phenomenal Olympic success. His tally of seven medals at a single Games has been bettered only by the great Michael Phelps and he was unquestionably one of the standout male athletes of the 1988 Games in Seoul. However a stunning loss in the 100m butterfly, when a horribly mistimed lunge for the finishing wall allowed Suriname's fast-finishing Anthony Nesty to win gold, lingers long in the memory. Biondi's first taste of Olympic success had come at Los Angeles in 1984 when he helped the 4x100m freestyle relay to gold. The 19-year-old Californian's potential was evident. His Seoul campaign opened in solid fashion with bronze in the 200m butterfly, and then followed the defeat by Nesty. Biondi's narrowest of defeats prompted the American to ponder whether he should have grown his fingernails longer, but he would have his revenge with five pulsating gold medals. Biondi showed his explosive pace by capturing 50m and 100m freestyle golds and helped the medley relay and 4x200 freestyle relay teams to victory too. But it was in the cavalry charge of the 4x100m relay that he really set himself apart. The quartet of Christopher Jacobs, Troy Dalbey, Thomas Jager and anchorman Biondi looked the standout favourites as the teams prepared for the start. The opening two legs saw the Americans surge into a slight lead but a brilliant third leg from Nikolai Yevseyev brought the Russians to neck and neck as the final swimmers entered the water. Biondi put the result beyond any doubt with a powerhouse opening 50m, and extended his lead on the return as the Americans knocked over half a second off the world record. His split time was astonishingly sub 48 seconds and his place in Olympic history was assured. Biondi would add two more relay golds in Barcelona in 1992 before taking up a career in teaching. Australia Caught in the Middle of Trump's Tariff Turmoil
Felicity Deane of Queensland University of Technology says Australia's economy is at risk of getting caught in a tit-for-tat dispute between Washington and Canberra's largest trading partners, such as China and Japan. She discusses how Australia can navigate President Trump's tariff policies on "Bloomberg: The Asia Trade." -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Evelin Jahl Adds Moscow Gold to Montreal Discus Triumph - Moscow 1980 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Evelin (Schlaak) Jahl wins discus throw gold for East Germany at the Moscow 1980 Olympics Games in these classic highlights. When Evelin Schlaak came out of nowhere to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, she not only crushed her East German team mates but also left the world's best trailing in her wake. She had barely turned 20 yet stunned the crowd in Canada with an Olympic record throw of 69 metres to capture the gold medal. Her success was dismissed as a flash in the pan by some of the media in her homeland, and the coverage only added fuel to her desire to retain the title at the Olympic Games in Moscow four years later. She got married and enjoyed a succession of promotions in the East German army, but gold in Moscow was the focal point of her training regime. She snared her second major world title at the World Cup, again in Moscow, and as the Games neared it was clear the spoils were going to be fought for by her and Bulgaria's Maria Petkova. Having finished World Cup runner-up in Moscow, Petkova seized the world record and went into the heart of battle at the Grand Arena as the slight favourite. Schlaak, now competing under the married name of Jahl, qualified with the minimum of effort, just clearing the 60-metre mark with her best throw. Petkova sent an effort over 65 metres to go through and the scene was set for a terrific showdown. However, Jahl produced a sequence of throws never seen before in Olympic competition, recording the four biggest efforts in the event. She won with yet another Olympic record mark of 69.96 metres, with Petkova again having to settle for the silver medal. Jahl retired two years later. Sweden's Women Win Curling Gold - Turin 2006 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The women's curling team from Sweden clinch Olympic triumph and the gold medals at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. At the Torino 2006 Olympic Games, the Swedish team was the favourite for the title. After the first round, the Scandinavians were first in the rankings, with seven victories in nine matches. Qualified for the semi-final, the Swedes faced their Norwegian neighbours, who had beaten them 10-3 in the round robin stage. This time, the match was very close. In the eighth end, the Norwegian player missed her shot, aimed at producing a double take-out of the Swedish stones. The Swedes were a hair's breadth from elimination. In the last end, Anette Norberg played the advantage perfectly, taking out the opponents' last two stones, thus leading her team to the final. Sweden won 5-4. In the gold medal match against Switzerland, the teams exchanged blow for blow. Although Sweden was leading by two points, the Swiss equalised in the 10th end. In the last end, Swiss skip Mirjam Ott managed a perfect delivery, playing two stones in the house. Anette Norberg had no choice -- she had only one stone left and could not risk making a mistake. She had to take out the two Swiss stones and get her own one into the house if she wanted to win gold. She pulled it off perfectly! Her team and she were Olympic champions. Anette Norberg was able to raise her game for these last two decisive matches, leading her teammates to victory. China's Stock Market Likely to Outperform This Year Despite Tariffs: Eurasia Group
Eurasia Group's Dan Wang discusses the impact of US tariffs on the Chinese economy and financial markets. According to Wang, "bilateral trade between China and the US is not the most important" for Beijing. She also tells Bloomberg Television that the expectation of currency devaluation is "not a weapon actually for China to use, it's more like financial suicide if China lets the market believe it will let yuan slide." She adds that investors will probably return to Chinese stocks "after this round of panic mode." -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Mark Spitz didn't have the greatest performances at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games and these highlights from his last place finish in the men's 200m butterfly show that it wasn't always glory for the swimming icon. Before becoming an international legend, Mark Spitz made his Olympic debut at the Mexico 1968 Games. Still, even for one of the most iconic swimmers ever, things don't always go as planned. The American swimmer had brashly predicted that he would win six gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Although he did take home two gold medals from the relays, he performed well below expectations in his individual races. His worst result at the Mexico Games was last place in the final of the 200m butterfly. As disappointing as his results might have been, he still won two individual medals, taking third in the 100m freestyle and winning silver in the 100m butterfly, second to fellow American swimmer Douglas Russell. Four years later, at the Munich 1972 Games, Spitz would become the most successful swimmer in a single edition of the Olympic Games only to be surpassed 36 years later by Michael Phelps, at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Japan Win First Ever Women's Volleyball Gold - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Japan women's volleyball team add to the men's bronze with the gold medal in the tournament as the home nation at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. This was the first time volleyball had been included in the Olympic programme, and it was keenly anticipated by the home supporters. The Japanese men took bronze, behind the dominant Soviet Union, but the home nation was more focused on Japan's women's volleyball team. Ten members of the team worked at the same spinning mill near Osaka. The team's coach, Hirofumi Daimatsu, also worked there, where he was in charge of buying office supplies. Such an ordinary exterior hid a man of extraordinary determination. His training techniques bordered on the extreme. Players were taunted and forced to train almost every day of the year, but Daimatsu also created new tactics that have survived to this day. He crafted a highly successful team that captured the fascination of the Japanese public. They were expected to win, and to win with style. They obliged by dropping just one set in the whole tournament, a narrow 15-13 reverse at the hands of Poland. Even then, there was a reason - that set was conceded only after Daimatsu had taken some of his best players off the court in order to frustrate the watching Soviet scouts. In the final match, the women played the USSR. The Soviet team actually reached the final with a superior record, with four victories and no sets conceded, but the match did not turn out to be the classic that neutrals might have hoped for. Instead, the Japanese were dominant from beginning to end, winning 3-0. For the home fans, though, it was exactly the result they had hoped for. The women's triumph was watched by 80% of the country on TV. After the Olympic Games were over, the team's captain, Masae Kasai, met the Prime Minister. She mentioned that she could not meet a prospective husband because of the athletes' strict training regime. He sympathised, set her up on a date with a man named Kazuo Nakamura - and the two went on to marry. The USA's Ann Curtis Wins 400m Freestyle Swimming Gold - London 1948 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Ann Curtis left the London 1948 Olympic Games as the most decorated female swimmer to compete, relive her victory in the 400m freestyle in these classic highlights. Ann Curtis was born in San Francisco and was taught to swim by nuns at her convent school. When she showed great talent, her coaching switched to Charlie Sava, at the Crystal Splash club, one of the best known and most highly regarded coaches of the time. There were tensions, at least initially, and Curtis was kicked off the team at least one, but she learned her lessons, persevered, and improved dramatically. Over the course of the 1940s, Curtis was one of the world's outstanding freestyle swimmers. National achievements came regularly - she took 31 national titles, and came to break four world records and no fewer than 56 American records. But the pinnacle of it all came in 1948. In London, Curtis won two gold medals. She set an Olympic record in the 400m Freestyle on her way to victory over Denmark's Karen-Margrete Harup by more than three seconds, and Gold came again in the 4x100m Relay, in which Curtis's performance on the anchor leg proved decisive. There was also a silver medal from the 100m Freestyle, where she was edged out by Greta Andersen. She left London as the most decorated female swimmer of the Games and returned home as one of America's best known sporting competitors. She retired from competition after the Olympic Games, and turned to coaching instead. Enrico Fabris Wins 1500m Speed Skating Gold - Torino 2006 Winter Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games as Italy's Enrico Fabris wins gold in the men's 1500 speed skating event. Enrico Fabris started skating at the age of six in his local club in Roana. When he was 22 years old he joined the police force and became a member of Fiamme Oro (Golden Flames), the famous state police sports group. At the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games, Fabris came 16th in the 5000m and 26th in the 1500m. But he was improving rapidly and went on to win at the Innsbruck Winter University Games in 2005. In 2006, Fabris marked his arrival as a major force with his first victories in the World Cup. Later, at the Torino Winter Games, Fabris claimed an unexpected bronze medal in the 5000m event. This bronze medal was Italy's first Olympic medal in this discipline. Five days later, the Olympic Games' first ever team pursuit event was held. Led by Fabris, the Italian relay team overcame the Dutch, who were hot favourites, and went on to beat the Canadians to win gold in front of their home crowd. Fabris completed a memorable Olympic Games by winning his second gold in the 1500m, his favourite event.
