Trump Tariffs: 20% Levy on EU Imports Comes Into Force
Donald Trump’s 20% blanket levy on European Union imports came into force overnight, with the bloc still working on its response to the US president’s previous measures. Member states are expected today to adopt the first retaliatory package against American tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Bloomberg's Oliver Crook reports. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Bob Hayes - Only Man To Win Olympic Gold & Superbowl | Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games as the USA's Bob Hayes wins the gold medal in the men's 100m event before going on to add the Superbowl to his impressive list of accolades. The 100m title at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games went to Bob Hayes, probably one of the fastest runners who has ever lived and certainly one of the most successful, even though his career was short. In the run-up to the Olympic Games, he appeared entirely unbeatable, winning each of 49 races in which he took part between 1962 and 1964. Hayes set a clutch of sprinting records. He was the first person to run the 100 yards (91.4m) in 9.1 seconds, and the first person to cover 60 yards (54.8m) in less than six seconds. The form book had him down as a red-hot favourite. He won his first-round race with ease, then won his quarter-final with a similar level of comfort. The only question now remaining was whether, under pressure, he may be hampered by a leg injury he had sustained a few months previously, but the semi-final seemed to answer that final doubt. He recorded a time of 9.91 seconds, which would have smashed the world record, but was not recognised because it was wind-assisted. It was more than enough, though, to get him into the final. He was placed in Lane 1, which had to be raked over after being badly dug up by athletes at the start of the 20km walk. Hayes was also wearing borrowed spikes, because one of his own pair was lost when it was kicked under his bed in the athletes' village. Yet he exploded out of the blocks, took an early lead, and won by 2m, equalling the world record. It was the 49th win in a row -- Hayes only lost once over 100m, and never over 100 yards (91.4m). His final act as an athlete, though, may have been his greatest. He ran the anchor leg in the 4x100m, and took over with the USA team in fifth place. What followed was an astonishing display of speed, strength and determination as he brought the baton home with a three-metre margin. It's believed his time for that 100m was around 8.8 secs, a remarkable pace even allowing for the flying start. After the Games, Hayes transferred to playing professional American football and was a huge success. He spent nearly a decade playing for the Dallas Cowboys, before finishing his career with the San Francisco 49ers, and is the only person to have secured victory in both the Olympic Games and the Super Bowl. Trump Says US Earning $2 Billion a Day from Global Tariffs
US President Donald Trump signaled once more that he would not back down from tariffs even as countries were coming to the negotiation table. He told a fundraising gala for House Republicans at the National Building Museum that the US was earning "$2 billion a day" and cast his sweeping levies as "legendary," despite them prompting a large market selloff and spurring predictions about a looming recession. Trump also spoke about his vision for the next US election, as well as how he's dealing with China and Russia. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? John Kuck Wins Shot Put Gold With New World Record - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe USA's John Kuck wins the shot put gold medal at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games by throwing a new world record distance in the event. Throughout his school life in Kansas, John Kuck was the most prodigious of field athletes, breaking a multitude of records in all the throwing disciplines. Blessed with an agile frame and lightning bursts of speed, Kuck was among the favourites going into the Olympics in Amsterdam yet a broken ankle threatened to derail his chances before the competition even started. As a student at Emporia State University in Kansas, he broke the world record in the shot put and the javelin and after a distinguished athletics career which saw him break more than 100 records the Amsterdam Games were very much seen as a swansong. He and the German thrower Emile Hirschfeld, who claimed a new world record of his own just months before the Games started, were the warm favourites for gold when the competition started. In the qualifying round at the Olympic Stadium his ankle injury was clear for all to see and he carefully threw the bare minimum to ensure his place in the six-man final. His US colleague, Herman Brix who would later become a prolific film actor, broke the Olympic record in qualifying. Come the final and all the competitors were at the peak of their form. Using a more side-on throwing style to their modern-day equivalents, the standard was high. It was clear a throw near or better than Hirschfeld's best mark of 15.79 would be required to take the gold. Hirschfeld fell four centimetres short but Kuck rose to the occasion. The pain from his ankle injury set to one side, Kuck sent the shot out to a new world record mark of 15.87. Hirschfeld would become the first man to break 16 metres at a meeting in his native Germany barely a month after the Games concluded. Greg Louganis Becomes Olympic Diving Icon- Los Angeles 1984 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Greg Louganis seals his name in the record books winning the men's 3m springboard diving event at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games. Few athletes in the history of the Olympic Games bounced back from such a troubled childhood to reach the heights of athletic achievement quite like the American diver Greg Louganis. Louganis was given up by his young parents for adoption when he was just three months old. He was raised in California, was ridiculed for the colour of his skin, experienced learning difficulties at school and even fell into alcohol abuse. However one thing pulled him back from the precipice; an unequalled ability to dive with consummate grace and athleticism. He finished second in the 10m platform event at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 and won his first world title two years later in Berlin. He would have been a warm favourite for the springboard and platform events at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow but for the United Stated-led boycott of the event. When competition started at the Olympic Swim Stadium in downtown Los Angeles in 1984, Louganis was the clear favourite not only among experts but also among the home crowd. The gulf in class was there for all to see; with each dive he extended his lead and the crowd in the arena were whipped into a frenzy. To say his victory in the springboard event was crushing would be an understatement. He finished on 754.41 points and won by the biggest ever margin in the history of the event. Four days later And Louganis completed the double, producing another breathtaking performance in the platform event to become the first diver since another American, Pete Desjardins, won double gold at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. Louganis sealed his place in the annals of the Olympic Games four years later when he repeated the double at the Seoul Games, after infamously clipping the board with his head in the springboard event. Maria Colon Upsets Javelin Stars - Moscow 1980 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights as Cuba's María Caridad Colón stuns her fellow competitors by winning the Women's Javelin during the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. The 22-year-old Cuban javelin thrower, Maria Colon had been competing effectively at junior level and claimed her first major international success at the Pan American Games the year before Moscow. Yet it was two Eastern European throwers who were dominating the world scene. East Germany's Ruth Fuchs and Tatyana Biryulina of Russia were seemingly exchanging the world record at will in the months leading up to the Olympic Games. As it turned out, both recorded disappointing performances in the heat of the final at Moscow's Grand Arena. Fuchs seemed to be the model of confidence in qualifying with the second largest throw of the preliminary round, while Colon eased through with an effort of 62.42m. But with Fuchs troubled by a nagging back injury and Biryulina missing her best form, it was left to the elegant Cuban to take the plaudits. She opened the competition with an effort that would not be surpassed. Her first round throw of 68.40m was an Olympic record, and none of the 12-woman field got close. Colon held on for her first gold medal, with Russian Saida Gunba some 64cms back in the silver medal position. East Germany's Ute Hommola took the bronze. Biryulina finished sixth, with Fuchs eighth. Joe Frazier Annouces Himself On The Olympic Stage With Gold - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe An incredible look back at the performance of the USA's Joe Frazier who would win boxing gold at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games before going on to become world heavyweight champion. Buster Mathis had been picked for the US boxing team on the basis of an excellent amateur record. He was to become a very good heavyweight boxer, but not one of the greats. Fate had that in mind for others. And so it was that Mathis broke his thumb shortly before the Olympic Games, and so his place in the team went to a reserve -- Joe Frazier. The man who fate had planned for Frazier was destined for legendary status. He is now considered one of the 10 greatest heavyweights of all time, and his professional contests against Muhammad Ali and George Foreman have become some of the most discussed and written-about fights of all time. It's hard to think of that golden era of boxing, and not think of "The Thriller in Manila", for instance, of the much-hyped and even more applauded "Fight of the Century". And yet in Tokyo, Frazier was much less well-known, at least at the start. In the first round, though, he announced his intentions with a first-round knockout of Uganda's George Oywello. His next opponent, the Australian Athol McQueen, floored Frazier in the first round, but the American recovered to stop his opponent. By now Frazier was the only American boxer left, and in the semi-finals he came up against the towering Soviet Vadim Yemelyanov. Despite the size difference -- the Russian was around 12cm taller -- Frazier won by knock-out in the second round. By then, though, he had felt a tremendous pain in his left hand. Like Mathis before the Games, Frazier had a broken thumb. He was determined to fight for gold, though. He told nobody about the injury and stepped into the ring the next day to face the German Hans Huber, a bus mechanic who had really wanted to qualify as a wrestler, in the final. The normally devastating left hook was, predictably, not as powerful, but Frazier fought cleverly, favoured his right much more than normal, and dug into his reserves of strength. He was rewarded with a 3-2 judges' decision. The gold was his -- greatness lay ahead. Six years later, he was world champion. Youngster Erik Lundqvist Wins Javelin Gold - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Amsterdam's 1928 Olympic Games saw Sweden's Erik Lundqvist win the men's javelin event at the age of 20 in the classic Olympic highlights. Scandinavian dominance in the javelin had long been the preserve of the Finns yet at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam it was an agile Swede who took the plaudits. Using an explosive run-up and whiplash action not dissimilar to the leading throwers of today, Erik Lundqvist looked full of confidence in the competition's four-group format. Favourite for the event had been Finn Eino Penttila but the occasion got to him and all he could muster was a throw good enough for sixth place. A sign painter by trade, Lundqvist sent the javelin out to an Olympic record distance of 66.60m, well over a metre clear of his nearest rival, the Hungarian Bela Szepes. With the neat touch of miniature national flags marking the competitors' best throws, the blue and yellow of Sweden stood some distance ahead of its rivals. The versatile Szepes had represented Hungary at the Winter Olympics in Chamonix four years earlier but had failed to win a medal in the Nordic Combined. Lundqvist won gold at the age of 20 years and a month to become the youngest person to ever win gold in the event.
