Incredible Moment As Underdog Billy Mills Wins 10,000m Gold - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Watch highlights of one of the most incredible stories in Olympic history as the USA's Billy Mills wins the 10,000m gold as a complete unknown underdog at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. The story of the 10,000m at the Tokyo 1964 Games is the story of one of the greatest upsets ever seen at the Olympics. The race had been predicted to be a three-way battle between Murray Halbert, the defending 5000m champion, the defending 10,000m champion Pyotr Bolotnikov, and the world record holder Ron Clarke. It did not go according to plan. By the halfway mark, though, only Clarke was anywhere near the front, accompanied by Tunisian Mohamed Gammoudi and the American Billy Mills. Mills was so unheralded that, in the run-up to the Games, not one reporter had asked him a single question. They should have done, for his story was memorable. He had been born in South Dakota as a member of a Native American family, and was raised on a reservation reserved for the Oglala Sioux people. He had 11 brothers and sisters, but was orphaned at the age of 12, and so was raised by his grandmother. He took up boxing and used to run as a way of staying fit, but discovered he was a better runner than boxer, and so won a place at the University of Kansas on an athletic scholarship. He excelled at cross-country while at university but, by the time of the Olympic Games, he had left Kansas to join the US Marine Corps. It was while serving in the armed forces that he qualified for the Games. His qualifying time was not notable, but he had spent years planning for the final and had belief that, on the day, he would match the standard of those around him. The race was more about endurance, tactics and even fortune than out-and-out pace. The last lap was a confusing affair, with slower runners being lapped as Clarke, Gammoudi and Mills charged along, elbowing and shoving each other as they jockeyed for position. Clarke led, then Gammoudi and then, to the astonishment of both the frontrunners, Mills sprinted past to win by almost three metres, beating his own personal best time by 47 seconds. "I'm flabbergasted," said Mills in victory. Famously, a Japanese reporter asked simply "who are you?" Victory changed his life. He was acclaimed by his tribe as a warrior and given the name Makoce Teh'la, which translates as "loves his country". He has devoted much of his life to working with Native American communities and remains the first and, so far, only American to win Olympic 10,000m gold. Trump 104% China Tariffs Kick In, 'Fire Sale' on US Treasuries | The Opening Trade 04/09
President Donald Trump is pushing ahead with tariffs on roughly 60 trading partners that he dubbed the “worst offenders” that took effect after midnight New York time. Most critically, the president plans to forge ahead with what would amount to a 104% levy on many Chinese goods. A selloff in longer-dated US Treasuries accelerated, worsening the slump in bond equivalents across the globe, as an escalation in the trade war sowed doubts over the haven status of US government debt. Every sector in Europe was down at the market open, but drugmakers are the biggest decliners so far after Trump’s comments that the US would be “announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals”. The Stoxx 600 Health Care Index has dropped to the lowest since October 2022. Weight-loss and diabetes drugmaker Novo Nordisk slumped along with AstraZeneca, GSK stocks also falling. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. The sprinting records that still stand - Florence Griffith Joyner - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch Florence Griffith Joyner - USA - Athletics - 100m & 200m - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games Florence Griffith Joyner's career was as brief as it was colourful. The Californian sprinter was known more for her outrageous outfits and long, painted fingernails as much as she was recognised for her sprinting achievements. But all that stopped in 1988, when the Flo-Jo phenomenon took root amid a string of incredible performances culminating in double sprint gold at the Olympic Games in Seoul. She was undoubtedly a sprinter of note, claiming silver in the 200m at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and again earning the runners-up spot in the world championships in Rome three years later. But it was in the relatively humble surrounds of the US Olympic trials in 1988 that she made her astonishing breakthrough. In the heats of the 100m she broke the world record held by compatriot Evelyn Ashford, knocking almost three tenths off the previous mark with an unheard of time of 10.49secs. Controversy raged over the new time as the wind reading for the race was 0.0 while the triple jump equipment registered a wind speed of 4.3 miles per second a few yards away. Yet the record stood and only Flo-Jo herself has come within touching distance of the time ever since. Her performances in Seoul were nothing short of remarkable. She dominated a world class field in the 100m final, beating Ashford and Heike Drechsler with blistering pace. She clocked 10.54secs in the final after establishing a two-yard lead at the halfway stage and scorching away from the field in the second half of the race. The 200m win was even more impressive, shattering the world record in the final with a time of 21.34secs to leave Jamaica's Grace Jackson, who beat her own personal best by a large, trailing about five metres behind in silver medal position. Griffith Joyner's records for 100m and 200m have yet to be broken. At the Games in Seoul, she ran in both relays, winning a third gold medal in the 4x100m and a silver in the 4x400m. In 1998, Griffith Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38, the victim of a form of epileptic seizure that led her to suffocate. The Equestrian jumping competition at the London 1948 Olympic Games took place at what would now be considered a very unusual stadium, Wembley Stadium. The Prix des Nations - as it was called at the time - was rightly celebrated as the world's greatest show-jumping test for both man and horse. Over forty riders from fifteen nations competed on the thousand metre course with sixteen obstacles each with its own peculiar difficulties. After a fierce competition which included many refusals, falls but also fantastic performances, it was the Mexicans who dominated the events. In the Individual competition it was fellow countrymen Humberto Mariles Cortes (riding Arete) and Ruben Uriza Castro (his horse Hatvey) who took the top two positions on the podium for Mexico. Jean Francois d'Orgeix (with Sucre de Pomme) won bronze in third place. Mexico also won the team competition, staying ahead of the Spanish team in second place, and the British hosts who completed the podium taking the bronze medal. Meanwhile, treasuries extended their declines and European stocks plunged after Trump hiked trade tariffs to a 100-year high. The yield on 30-year Treasuries surged to the highest since November 2023 amid growing doubts about the haven status of US sovereign bonds. Europe's stock benchmark fell more than 3%. While Urselmann held the record for the event, Lonsborough had a history of beating her rival when they were placed head to head. At the Olympic Games, anything could happen. Knowing the nineteen year-old Brit was a very strong finisher, Urselmann began the race at a very strong pace to take the early lead. Lonsbrough only managed to caught up and pass Urselmann in the final 50 metres, with the German fighting back harder than in any previous race between the two of them. With an Olympic gold medal at stake, Lonsbrough also brought her greatest effort to final metres, becoming the new Olympic champion with a new record time of 2m49.5s. Oil Prices at Four-Year Low on Trade War, Surprise OPEC+ Move

Don Schollander - First To Win Multiple Swimming Golds - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Don Schollander becomes the first Olympic swimmer to win multiple gold medals at one edition of the Games in Tokyo 1964. In recent years, we have become accustomed to the idea of a swimmer winning multiple gold medals, but it wasn't always recognised as such a possibility. In 1964, the American Don Schollander became the first Olympic swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Games, a feat that was all the greater because the victories were accompanied by three world records and one Olympic record. And all this, despite missing out on his favourite event. Schollander had learnt to swim well thanks to the teaching of his uncle, who ran a swimming school. At high school, he wanted to play American football, but was judged too small and so turned to swimming instead. His talent was obvious and, in 1962, he won three freestyle events at the American Championships. Selection for the Olympic team was assured, but the pity was that his strongest race, the 200m freestyle, was not part of the programme for Tokyo. Instead, he was chosen for the 100m, 400m, 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay. First up was the 100m, in which Schollander took the lead not long after the turn and held off the challenge of Britain's Bobby McGregor to earn gold and an Olympic record. Next up was the 4x100m relay, in which he swam the anchor leg, inheriting a substantial lead to bring his team home in a new world record. The third of his four finals was the 400m. Schollander's used his 200m excellence to hold the lead at half distance, but if his rivals were expecting him to fade then they were to be disappointed. Victory came with a margin of more than two and a half seconds, lowering his own world record. If that victory seemed easy, the triumph of the 4x200m team was even more straightforward. The USA was so confident in this event that a reserve team had been used in qualifying -- and had still set the fastest time. In the final, with Schollander again on the anchor leg, they demolished the world record, becoming the first team ever to go faster than eight minutes and finishing the race more than seven seconds ahead of Germany, in second. It was the first time that an American had won four golds since Jesse Owens in 1936 and also made Schollander the only quadruple winner of the 1964 Games. On his return home, he was acclaimed as the USA's athlete of the year, but he was a reluctant star. He disliked the limelight and retired after the 1968 Games, in which he won a gold and silver, saying that he was sick of water, and wouldn't be taking a bath or shower for the next two years!
