How Guyana Just Became the Most Important Country in the West
Guyana has a population of 800,000 people. It is smaller than the city of Jacksonville, Florida. And right now, it is producing 900,000 barrels of oil every single day with projections to reach 1.7 million by 2030.
America is there. China is there. Russia is watching.
In the last year alone: a Venezuelan warship entered Guyana's exclusive economic zone and came within 700 meters of an active ExxonMobil oil platform. The United States and Guyana signed a formal military expansion agreement under a strategy called "Southern Spear." Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly warned Venezuela standing next to Guyana's President in Georgetown that any move against Guyana or ExxonMobil would have consequences. And the International Court of Justice issued binding orders that Venezuela publicly refused to honor.
This is not a story about oil wealth. This is a story about what happens when a country the world forgot about discovers something so valuable that the three most powerful forces on earth start rearranging their foreign policy around it and about how Guyana is quietly using that position to hold leverage none of them expected.
In this documentary, we cover:
→ How Guyana went from one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest countries to the world's fastest-growing economy in under 6 years averaging 47% GDP growth per year from 2022 to 2024 (IMF)
→ The Stabroek Block 11 billion barrels of recoverable oil, controlled by ExxonMobil (45%), Hess/Chevron (30%), and China's state oil company CNOOC (25%)
→ Why the consortium's $10.4 billion combined profit in 2024 means America and China both need Guyana stable whether they agree on anything else or not
→ The full Essequibo crisis: Venezuela's referendum, its annexation law, the ICJ's 12-3 ruling, and the Venezuelan warship that came 700 meters from an active production platform
→ Russia's role 55 years of diplomatic history, its support for Venezuela at the UN Security Council, and why Moscow holds a veto over any international enforcement
→ The military architecture Guyana is building: US Southern Command, France's $42M patrol vessel contract, Colombia surveillance agreement, Brazil border cooperation, and an 800% defence budget increase since 2020
→ The ICJ final judgment expected in 2026 and why winning the case may not be enough
→ What Guyana's Natural Resource Fund, free university tuition, Gas-to-Energy project, and $2.57 billion in 2024 oil revenue tell us about whether this transformation is permanent
