The US Just Blocked Jamaica's $3 Billion Deal with China (Panic in Kingston)
The United States Secretary of State flew into Kingston, Jamaica in March 2025 not for diplomacy, but for a warning. Standing beside Prime Minister Andrew Holness at a joint press conference, Marco Rubio called China's Caribbean investment strategy "predatory," warned that Huawei telecommunications would push American investors out, and put Jamaica directly at the centre of a superpower contest that most people outside the region had no idea was happening.
Jamaica said it had received no formal US request to limit Chinese influence.
