The only college player selected was Christian Laettner, while Shaquille O'Neal was not considered despite his outstanding achievements in college. Under the direction of coach Chuck Daly, the team dominated the tournament, winning all eight games by an average margin of 44 points. In the final, they defeated Croatia 117:85 to win the gold medal. Managers for NASA's space shuttle and International Space Station programs say both are moving towards a targeted May 14 launch of Atlantis to the orbiting complex. A formal launch date for the 12-day mission to deliver an Integrated Cargo Carrier and a Russian-built Mini Research Module to the station is expected to be set at the conclusion of a May 5th Flight Readiness Review.

Progress docked to the International Space Station's Pirs Docking Compartment on May 1, 2010, three days after its launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The spring 2010 campaign of NASA's Operation IceBridge is underway in Greenland. The mission is measuring the Greenland ice sheet, glaciers and sea ice. This second phase of the project will use a P-3B airplane which will deploy to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. IceBridge, is a six-year NASA mission and is the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice ever flown. It will yield an unprecedented three-dimensional view of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice. Data collected during IceBridge will help scientists bridge the gap in polar observations between NASA's Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) -- in orbit since 2003 -- and ICESat-2, planned for late 2015. ICESat stopped collecting science data in 2009, making IceBridge critical for ensuring a continuous series of observations.

The largest seizure of illegal ivory in Africa in more than a quarter century took place in the country of Togo, which has no wild elephants. Investigative journalist Bryan Christy traveled to the port in Lomé, Togo, where more than four tons of illegal ivory was detected by local authorities.
