Why did the United States build a fully operational military airbase deep in the Jamaican countryside? And why is the 99-year lease that made it possible still technically active today? In 1940, Britain signed a deal with the United States called the Destroyers for Bases Agreement. In exchange for 50 aging warships, Britain handed over 99-year leases on land across eight Caribbean and Atlantic territories — including Jamaica. No Jamaican was consulted. No Jamaican was asked. The deal was signed in Washington and London, and Jamaica was the price. The Americans sent 200 soldiers codenamed "Force Tuna" to build an airbase in Clarendon Parish. They constructed three runways, barracks, hangars, fuel depots, and a seaplane base on Little Goat Island. They spent $17.5 million — nearly $290 million in today's money. B-29 Superfortress bombers, the same aircraft used to drop atomic bombs on Japan, landed and refueled on Jamaican concrete. Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1944. President Truman visited in 1948. And when the war ended, the Americans stripped the base and walked away — but they never formally cancelled the lease. This is the story of Vernamfield — the American airbase Jamaica has never fully reckoned with. From the Destroyers for Bases Agreement to Operation Neuland, from the Battle of the Caribbean to Eric Williams' fight to reclaim Chaguaramas in Trinidad, this video uncovers one of the most important and least known chapters of Caribbean history.
