The Night 7 Gunmen Stormed Bob Marley's House — And Who Sent Them
This is the story of the night seven gunmen stormed Bob Marley's house in Kingston, Jamaica — and the disturbing trail of evidence that points to exactly who sent them.
On December 3rd, 1976, at approximately 8:30 PM, seven armed men pulled up to Bob Marley's home at 56 Hope Road in two white Datsun compact cars and opened fire. They shot Bob Marley. They shot his wife Rita in the head. They shot his manager Don Taylor five times. Five children were inside the house. Nobody died — but what followed was far more chilling than the shooting itself.
The security guards had mysteriously vanished. The gunmen fled toward Tivoli Gardens, the JLP garrison community in West Kingston. Declassified U.S. State Department cables confirmed the shooting was "probably political." And every single person who could have revealed who gave the order — the alleged organizer Carl "Byah" Mitchell, the alleged leader Lester "Jim Brown" Coke, their mentor Claude Massop — died under violent or suspicious circumstances before they could ever be brought to justice.
Two days after being shot, Bob Marley walked onto the stage at National Heroes Park and performed for 90 minutes in front of 80,000 people with a bullet still lodged in his arm. That bullet remained in his body until the day he died on May 11th, 1981.
