Our film journey begins in Alaska's west. We are hoping to find glacier bears in the glacial regions of the Katmai National Park on the Douglas River.
By late July, brown bears arrive to fish for salmon while grizzlies forage for berries and green twigs in the nearby forests. This is Katmai, Alaska’s most volcanic region—a "powder keg" of 15 active volcanoes ringed by glaciers. In the Hook Glacier area, we are joined by moose and lynx, while bald eagles gather at the glacial boundary to feed on their catch. We eventually spot a rare glacier bear; driven by hunger, he has descended from the ice to feast on fresh shoots and berries.
Continuing our film expedition, we head toward Princess Royal Island in British Columbia. En route, we encounter black bear sows guiding their cubs to the salmon runs, staying vigilant against nearby New World porcupines.
Then, out of the blue, a Kermode—or "spirit bear"—appears. Seemingly unafraid, he focuses entirely on the salmon. Soon, a second Kermode emerges to snack on cranberries, allowing us to film from a thrillingly close range. However, when a black bear arrives to claim the bush, the Kermode chooses to avoid a confrontation, returning instead to the river. It is remarkable footage of one of the world's rarest animals.
