The Secret Buried Under Jamaica's Main Airport
A stone pillar on the Palisadoes strip in Kingston, Jamaica claims to mark the "first coconut tree" ever planted on the island — but that claim doesn't hold up. In this video, we uncover the real story behind the monument: a 19th-century coconut plantation built with prison labor under the man who ran Jamaica's General Penitentiary, and how that same stretch of land eventually became Norman Manley International Airport. From Spanish-era coconut cultivation in the 1500s, to a failed 1869 plantation run on convict labor, to a WWII naval air station, to the international airport millions of travelers land at today — this is a piece of Jamaican history hiding in plain sight, buried under one small roadside stone most people drive past without a second look. 🌴 What you'll learn in this video: The true origin of coconuts in Jamaica — and why the monument's claim is misleading Who John Horton was, and his role running Jamaica's General Penitentiary How the Palisadoes coconut plantation collapsed by the 1880s The land's transformation from plantation to WWII naval base (HMS Buzzard) to Norman Manley International Airport Why this stone pillar still stands on the Palisadoes road today This is part of the One Love Jamaica series uncovering suppressed, overlooked, and erased Jamaican history — stories that are erased, but not gone. 📍 Filmed on location at Palisadoes, Kingston, Jamaica #JamaicaHistory #Palisadoes #NormanManleyAirport #JamaicanHeritage #KingstonJamaica #CoconutIndustry #GeneralPenitentiary #ErasedButNotGone #JamaicaTravel #CaribbeanHistory Thank you for watching this video. 13 Creepiest Places In Barbados With Disturbing True Stories
Barbados has a sealed church vault at the center of its most famous coffin legend, a plantation ledger recording a 40% death rate for the enslaved workers who built one of the oldest colleges in the Americas, and a surf break that is still pulling swimmers under today. This list is built entirely from parish registers, colonial census records, and government archaeology reports. Every one of them has a body count. In this video, we explore: → The 1740 plantation ledgers behind one of the oldest theological colleges in the Americas, and the 40% death rate they recorded. → The reef that has swallowed over 200 ships since 1666, and is still charted as a hazard today. → The British fort where roughly 80 soldiers per 1,000 died, and the governor traditionally credited with draining the ground in 1817. → The 1,000 foot cliff carrying a suicide legend no parish register has ever confirmed. → The pirate's castle, the reef wrecks he may not have actually caused, and the 2010 fire nobody ever explained. → The 1816 rebellion that ended with as many as 1,000 dead and a toll historians still can't fully reconcile. → The 1780 hurricane, the deadliest on record, that killed over 4,300 people and leveled the church that still stands in Bridgetown today. → The 1854 epidemic that killed over 20,000 people, roughly one in six on the entire island. → The 370 year old plantation house whose family is linked to an estimated 30,000 enslaved deaths across Barbados and Jamaica. → The surf break with a standing no swimming order and a documented history of pulling people under. → The largest excavated slave cemetery in the Americas, with over 570 burials mapped by ground-penetrating radar. → The WWII ship torpedoed in Barbados waters in 1942, then finally sunk with 43 dead in 1944. And at number one: the Chase Vault at Christ Church Parish Church in Oistins, the most famous story in Barbados. According to accounts passed down, a sealed marble tomb was opened repeatedly between 1812 and 1820 and the heavy lead coffins inside were found thrown from their places each time, even after the governor pressed his signet ring into the cement to catch any tampering. What the documented record actually holds is narrower: investigations in 1907 and again in recent scholarship found no trace of the movements in the parish burial register or any newspaper of the day. The coffins were removed and the marble vault has stood open and empty ever since. You can still visit it in the churchyard today. The Ruins Nobody Talks About | Hordley Hospital, Jamaica
There are some places in Jamaica where you set out looking for one piece of history… and end up discovering an entire historical landscape. On this journey, I head into the hills of eastern St. Thomas in search of the forgotten remains associated with Hordley Estate. What began as a search for plantation history turned into an unexpected discovery—the ruins of an old hospital hidden away in the hills. But what exactly was this hospital? When was it established? Who used it? And how does it fit into the wider history of Hordley and St. Thomas? In this episode, we explore the ruins, examine the historical clues, and try to piece together the story of a site that has largely disappeared from Jamaica's modern landscape. This is another journey into Jamaica's forgotten history—where the ruins themselves can sometimes tell a story that never made it into the textbooks. Watch to the end as we explore what remains of this forgotten piece of St. Thomas history. 📍 Location: St. Thomas, Jamaica 🏚️ Historical site: Hordley / Hordley Hospital If you enjoy exploring Jamaica's forgotten plantations, abandoned buildings, ruins, archaeology and hidden historical sites, subscribe to Elite Jamaica for more. #JamaicaHistory #StThomasJamaica #Hordley #HordleyHospital #JamaicanHistory #JamaicaRuins #HiddenJamaica #ForgottenJamaica #JamaicaHeritage #ExploreJamaica #PlantationHistory #EliteJamaica
