Jeremiah was still young when he received his calling. He hesitated. He said he did not know how to speak. But the message given to him would become one of the strongest prophetic voices in the Old Testament. Jeremiah warned that judgment was coming. Babylon was rising. Jerusalem would not remain safe simply because the temple stood in the city. Religious ritual without obedience would not protect the nation. His words were difficult to hear. Many rejected them. Some mocked him. Others threatened him. Jeremiah became known for speaking a message that almost no one wanted to accept. He confronted kings, priests, prophets, and leaders. He warned that false confidence would not stop the consequences of rebellion. At one point, his prophecies were written on a scroll and read before King Jehoiakim. The king cut the scroll piece by piece and burned it. But the message did not disappear. Jeremiah dictated the words again. As Babylon tightened its control over Judah, the pressure increased. Jeremiah was accused of weakening the morale of the people. He was arrested. He was beaten. He was placed in confinement. At one point, he was thrown into a cistern and left sinking in the mud. Yet he continued speaking. Jeremiah also faced false prophets who promised peace. One of the most famous confrontations involved Hananiah, who claimed that Babylon’s power would soon be broken. Jeremiah said otherwise. He insisted that Judah would face a long period of submission and that resisting Babylon would only bring greater destruction. Then came the final crisis. King Zedekiah ruled while Babylonian forces surrounded Jerusalem. The city suffered under siege. Food became scarce. Fear spread. And still, the leadership resisted the message Jeremiah had repeated for years. Eventually, Jerusalem fell. The walls were breached. The temple was burned. The royal palace was destroyed. Many people were killed or taken into exile. Zedekiah was captured, and the kingdom of Judah came to an end. Jeremiah had warned about this moment. Now he had to live through it. But his message was not only about judgment. Jeremiah also spoke about restoration. He told the exiles that they would not remain in Babylon forever. He spoke about a future return. And in one of the most important passages in the entire Old Testament, he announced the promise of a new covenant. This covenant would not depend only on words written externally. God’s law would be written on the heart. This promise later became central to the New Testament. In this complete biblical exploration, we follow Jeremiah from his early calling to his confrontations with kings, the burning of the scroll, his conflicts with false prophets, his imprisonment, the Babylonian siege, the fall of Jerusalem, and the promises of restoration that came afterward. Why was Jeremiah rejected so strongly? Why did Judah refuse to listen? Why did he speak against resistance to Babylon? What made his message different from the false prophets? And how did a prophet surrounded by destruction still speak about hope and a new covenant? Jeremiah’s story is more than the story of a suffering prophet. It is a story about warning, rejection, courage, grief, judgment, perseverance, and hope. Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to the US, says many Israelis are in shock as Gadi Eisenkot's bloc holds a narrow lead over Benjamin Netanyahu's, but cautions that the result could still change as votes are counted.
