Harpooning for Survival | Lamalera: Indonesia's Last Whaling Culture | Free Documentary Bhutan - Life Between the Middle Ages and the Modern World: https://youtu.be/xxf-RtWO6-c Nestled in Eastern Indonesia, Lamalera is a village defined by an ancient tradition: the hunting of whales. Passed down through generations, this practice is not merely a livelihood — it is the heartbeat of the community. But change is on the horizon. Young people are leaving to work and study in the cities, and pressure to abandon whaling grows ever louder. At the centre of this story are four voices. Kris, a 15-year-old navigating high school and an uncertain future. Her father Karolous, a seasoned harpooner carrying the weight of tradition. Ignacious, a respected ship builder whose craft is inseparable from the hunt. And Sister Maria, a Catholic nun offering her own quiet perspective on a village in transition. Together, they open the doors of their world — offering an intimate, first-hand portrait of one of the last indigenous whaling cultures on earth, and revealing how every thread of life in Lamalera leads back to the sea. #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #indonesia #tradition #change #whaling ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe to Free Documentary Channel for free: https://bit.ly/2YJ4XzQ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is passionate about sharing the beauty and diversity of our world through high-quality documentaries available for free on YouTube. WILDERNESS WONDERS AND CRAYFISH HUNT
Australian crayfish have a long history, which can be traced back to ancient times, and have experienced changes from being a common food to being protected species. Here is a detailed introduction: Ancient Times - Indigenous Use: For thousands of years, crayfish have been an important food source for Indigenous Australians. Archaeological evidence shows that they were eating yabbies as early as 28,000 years ago, and rock lobsters were also part of their diet. Indigenous people not only used them as food but also had certain understandings and utilization of their living habits and distribution. Early European Exploration and Settlement Period - Discovery and Recording: In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, European explorers and settlers arrived in Australia and began to discover and record crayfish resources. In 1793, French explorers caught a large number of rock lobsters in Recherche Bay, Tasmania. In 1805, Robert Knopwood, a navy chaplain in Hobart, recorded catching a large "crayfish" (actually a rock lobster) in his diary. In 1831, explorer Thomas Mitchell first described yabbies in northern New South Wales. - Early Utilization: At that time, crayfish were not as valuable as they are now and were relatively cheap. They were not only used for personal consumption but also began to be sold in the market. For example, in 1829, rock lobsters were sold in Hobart at a price of 6 pence to 1 shilling each. The Small Jamaican Village That Inspired the World
#FirstFreeVillage #OneLoveJamaica #JamaicaHistory #Jamaica #Sligoville Sligoville holds a powerful place in Jamaica’s history. Recognized as the first free village in the Caribbean, this community represents one of the earliest and most important steps toward freedom after Emancipation. In this video, we explore the story of Sligoville, St. Catherine, and its deep connection to Highgate House, one of Jamaica’s oldest surviving colonial-era structures. Built in the 18th century, Highgate House once served colonial governors and plantation owners, but today it stands overlooking a village that changed the course of Jamaican and Caribbean history. We examine how formerly enslaved Jamaicans were able to legally purchase land, establish homes, and build a self-sustaining community — a radical and groundbreaking idea at the time. This is not just a history lesson, but a reflection on freedom, patience, process, and progress, and why these lessons still matter in modern-day Jamaica. From colonial power to community empowerment, the story of Sligoville and Highgate House helps us better understand Jamaica’s journey, its resilience, and the foundation upon which today’s society is built. Whether you are in Jamaica or part of the global Jamaican diaspora, this story connects the past to the present — and reminds us that true progress is built step by step. #Emancipation #JamaicaCulture #CaribbeanHistory Thank you for watching this video. Jamaica’s Ironworks and the Question Behind the Industrial Revolution
What if one of the most important technologies in British history wasn’t British at all? Before iron ships, iron cannons, and the Industrial Revolution, Britain faced a critical problem: its iron was brittle, unreliable, and unfit for empire. History credits Henry Cort with solving this problem — but newly examined records reveal a different origin. This video uncovers the Jamaican origins of mass-produced wrought iron, developed by highly skilled Black metallurgists in the late 18th century. Their process — involving rolling mills adapted from Jamaican sugar technology — was later seized, transferred to Britain, patented, and rebranded as British innovation. Drawing from shipping logs, correspondence, industrial records, and military concerns, this investigation shows how stolen metallurgical knowledge removed a major bottleneck in British naval and industrial power — and how the original innovators were erased from history. This is not revisionism. It is restoration. Topics Covered: • Wrought iron vs cast iron • Jamaican ironworks and Black metallurgical expertise • Henry Cort and the “Cort Process” • Industrial espionage and imperial appropriation • Iron, empire, and military power • Why Black innovation disappears from textbooks #IndustrialRevolution #JamaicanHistory #BlackInventors #ErasedHistory #StolenInnovation #BritishEmpire #AfricanMetallurgy #HiddenHistory #Colonialism #HistoryMatters
