Heart of a Fighter
Cody remains unresponsive. Faith gives an initial diagnosis of appendicitis, but with no doctor available, their options are limited. They send for Dr. Karl Strohm from a neighboring town, but time is running out. They decide to track down Carson Shepherd, who just recently was revealed to be a doctor. Bill Avery organizes a search party to locate Carson. Everyone rides out. Elizabeth is the one to find Carson. She makes a plea; Carson is reluctant, but ultimately agrees to return to Hope Valley to check on Cody. Rosemary goes to the jail to check on Gowen. She tells him the dire news about Cody.. When Bill notices Gowen’s concern, so he makes the excuse of “bad weather” to postpone taking Gowen in for his arraignment. Carson returns and inspects Cody. He confirms Faith’s diagnosis, but before he can take action, he is overruled by Dr. Strohm. Dr. Strohm reminds Carson of his troubled history as a physician and tells Abigail that surgery will not be necessary. Carson passionately objects. Abigail is caught between a rock and a hard place; she decides to wait and see if Cody improves. In a private, quiet moment, Rosemary updates Lee on Cody’s situation. The news seems to affect Lee in a surprising way. He is reluctant to talk at first, but eventually Rosemary gets him to open up. He tells her the story of his brother, Patrick who died when they were both children. Carson finds Dr. Strohm at the saloon. They exchange words and it becomes apparent that Dr. Strohm is inebriated; as things heat up, Bill Avery intervenes to break up the argument. Carson checks on Cody, whose condition is becoming critical. Carson tells Abigail that Dr. Strohm will not be able to perform surgery. Abigail tells Carson to do the surgery. Carson is successful in removing Cody’s appendix, but they are not out of the woods. As they wait, Dr. Strohm barges in and accuses Carson of acting inappropriately. Abigail comes to Carson’s defense and sends Dr. Strohm away. Elizabeth talks to Marlise and urges her to forgive Carson. Marlise is still angry, but later finds herself wandering through Hope Valley, eventually ending up at church in time to hear Frank’s sermon. She winds up speaking with Carson and letting him know that she has forgiven him.After a long night, Cody’s fever breaks. He wakes up in a weakened state, but Abigail is there to greet him. Abigail tells Elizabeth about the news. As Cody’s condition improves, Abigail tells Carson that he should stay in Hope Valley... as a doctor. Two weeks later, at Cody’s birthday party, the town comes together to celebrate. Abigail has a big present for Cody and Becky -- the adoption paperwork went through and she will officially be their mother. Later, Elizabeth and Abigail are walking down the street when they see a group of official looking mounties. They approach and Elizabeth braces herself for whatever news they might have.
