Jamaica was once considered so economically valuable that, in 1753, British policymakers proposed trading Canada to France in exchange for the island. Why? Because Jamaica was far more than a Caribbean paradise. For centuries, its strategic location, natural harbour, fertile land, sugar plantations, bauxite reserves, coffee, and access to Atlantic trade made it one of the most valuable territories in the British Empire. This documentary explores the real history behind Jamaica's extraordinary economic importance—from the Taino understanding of Xaymaca, to Spanish colonization, the rise and fall of Port Royal, the enormous wealth generated by the sugar economy, Maroon resistance, the Baptist War and emancipation, the discovery of Jamaica's vast bauxite deposits, and the continuing importance of Kingston Harbour. At the center of the story is submerged Port Royal—the once-thriving English Caribbean city that disappeared beneath Kingston Harbour after the devastating earthquake of 1692. Centuries later, much of the archaeological site remains underwater, preserving a remarkable record of Jamaica's colonial past. And in July 2025, UNESCO recognized the archaeological significance of Historic Port Royal by inscribing it on the World Heritage List.
